Alabama’s football program lost two key people on Friday. The departure of head defensive coach and linebackers coach Kevin Steele, who took the defensive coordinator’s position at Clemson, wasn’t a surprise. But running back Glen Coffee’s decision to enter the NFL Draft raised eyebrows.

Smelley transferring to Alabama
Chris Smelley, who spent three seasons playing quarterback for Steve Spurrier at South Carolina, has been granted a release and will transfer to the University of Alabama. Smelley, who grew up in Tuscaloosa, said he hopes to play baseball and possibly football for the Crimson Tide. His brother, Brad, recently completed his freshman season as a tight end on the Alabama football team.
