Tide Tidbits – January 13, 2009

Steele jumped to Clemson when Chavis declined offer
Departed Alabama defensive head coach Kevin Steele returned to the Crimson Tide’s football complex Monday to collect items and hold a sit-down with head coach Nick Saban. There were no hard feelings, at least on Steele’s end. “Football-wise, we have conversed and been in contact for 25 years, Xs and Os-wise,” Steele said of Saban, “and will continue to be.”

Saban will need another award-winning performance to justify Tide’s early rankings
Alabama hasn’t stacked double-digit wins on top of double-digit wins since 1991 and 1992. Saban himself has never coached teams to at least 10 wins in back-to-back seasons, so he has a personal goal-oriented challenge beyond the immediate task of replacing some very valuable football players. It’s a tribute to Saban, of course, that so many observers believe, no matter which players or assistants are leaving, Alabama isn’t going away. They’re right. It’s not.

Nick Walker added to East-West Shrine roster
Former University of Alabama tight end Nick Walker has been added to the roster for the East-West Shrine Game, which will be played Saturday in Houston. Walker reported for practice over the weekend and will work out all week under former Georgia Tech and Army coach Bobby Ross, who will coach the East squad. Former Crimson Tide head coach Gene Stallings is coaching the West team.

Kerry Murphy cleared to enroll at UA
Nearly two years after first signing with Alabama, former Hoover High standout lineman Kerry Murphy has been cleared to enroll and join the Crimson Tide’s football team, the Press-Register has confirmed. Murphy spent the past year-and-a-half at Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia. He twice signed with Alabama and failed to qualify. Murphy, who received clearance today from the NCAA and enrolled at UA, had until Wednesday of this week to enroll for this semester and participate in spring practice.
