A.J. McCarron explains why recruiting is totally awesome…
Anyway, A.J. was telling me about a time when Thompson accidentally interrupted a meeting between him, Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin, and DT coach Ed Orgeron. “After they left, (Thompson) started talking about them, saying,  ‘You better not go to Tennessee of all places,’ ” McCarron recalled. “Not Tennessee. And then he ends up at Tennessee. And he knows the history from his time here as a player, how Alabama hates Tennessee. But money talks, I guess.”

Sought-after recruits to visit UA campus
After hosting numerous elite official visitors last weekend in Tuscaloosa, the University of Alabama football coaching staff is preparing for another big weekend as 10 official visitors are expected to arrive beginning today, including one of the most sought-after recruits in the nation. Rueben Randle, Scout.com five-star wide receiver from Bastrop High School in Louisiana, is the headliner of the group. Randle is the nation’s top receiver prospect and a high priority for the Alabama staff.

CECIL HURT: Assistants starting to see big bucks, too
It wasn’t that long ago when college football assistant coaches in the Southeastern Conference could, if they needed some extra money, do construction work in the summer. If that wasn’t enough of a supplement, they could — and occasionally did — coach the basketball team. Those times are gone, though. They have been swept away by the economic revolution that has overtaken college football. Assistant coaches still work as hard as ever, but they are more amply compensated for their labor.

Tide’s top recruiter takes Tennessee job
In a stunning move that shakes up the recruiting landscape in Mobile and elsewhere, Thompson accepted an offer to join Lane Kiffin’s coaching staff at Tennessee. He is the newest member of a defensive coaching staff that already included coordinator Monte Kiffin Lane’s father and former Ole Miss head coach Ed Orgeron.

Roll Tide!
