Tide Tidbits – January 19, 2009

Official visits… Who doesn’t love official visits?
Eight official visitors took in the lovely scenery in Tuscaloosa (A little Chuck’s Fish, some Bryant-Denny, etc.), including six UA commits. Oh, and some guy named Rueben Randle spent his time hanging out with Julio Jones. Trent Richardson after his Florida visit: “They were recruiting me real hard. I sat down with Coach (Urban) Meyer. He told me how badly they want me. They say I’m the missing piece to their offense. I’m the big back with speed that they need. There’s a lot of pressure on me. But I’m still committed to Alabama.”

Recruiting updates and some new rankings …
Alabama has finished up a second consecutive weekend of official visits, and the top uncommitted target in town was Louisiana WR Rueben Randle. His host was Julio Jones, and as Randle’s father told BamaOnline.com, “They spent a lot of time talking over things. I don’t think they get into recruiting much. They are very similar in a lot of ways.” Randle is down to Alabama, LSU and Oklahoma with no clear decision in sight. (View more below about this weekend’s visits).

Tigers need top prospect more than he needs them
Suddenly, a position that was once a strength at LSU and often considered among the best in the nation over the last several years is looking like a weakness. Rueben, they need you. Rueben Randle, the No. 1 wide receiver prospect in the nation out of Bastrop High and the No. 2 overall prospect by Rivals.com, is strongly considering LSU. He’s also strongly considering Alabama, though. Randle was in Tuscaloosa, Ala., over the weekend for his official visit to Alabama.
