Tide Tidbits – January 21, 2009

Three UA commitments named Parade All-Americans
Foley lineman D.J. Fluker, Andalusia linebacker Nico Johnson and Pensacola, Fla., running back Trent Richardson — all verbal pledges to Alabama’s expected 2009 signing class — have been named to Parade Magazine’s All-America High School Football Team. Richardson was rated as the nation’s No. 1 running back.

Coach gets first-hand look
Mike Tice, the 6-foot-8 assistant coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, took a few minutes at Monday’s Senior Bowl practice to give Travis McCall some pointers on his stance. About a minute later, Tice picked up a pad and asked McCall to perform a blocking drill. McCall, the 6-foot-2, 276-pound native of Prattville, accelarated through his block, hitting the pad with a loud thud and driving the gargantuan coach backwards. Tice is learning this week what Alabama’s opponents already know: McCall is one of the best pure blockers in the nation.

Nick Saban falls behind Rich Brooks, relative to awesomeness
So, you guys know that Alabama coach Nick Saban is the star of a Ford truck commercial campaign. He’s in two commercials and tons of billboards. I point you to Evidence A of complete awesomeness: The Exclusive 2009 Rich Brooks Edition F150 Crew Cab, which will be sold as the Official ‘Brooks Edition’ Truck. Seriously. So, I ask, can a Saban truck be far behind?

Hello again, Mike Shula (The Senior Bowl edition)…
One of the stranger, odder coincidences of all time (or something) is the fact that former Alabama coach Mike Shula is on the Jacksonville Jaguars staff in charge of coaching the South team in this week’s Senior Bowl. And that the team’s quarterback is John Parker Wilson. “I feel good that the guys we recruited are here (in Mobile) right now,” Shula said. “I just wish I’d done a better job of putting them in a position to win more so that they didn’t have to let (me) go.”

Roll Tide!
