Tide Tidbits – February 11, 2009

AJC: Vols’ bright young coach dim to SEC
The Evil Genius talked big, too. The difference was, Steve Spurrier had already won something before he arrived in the SEC. (Like an ACC championship —- at Duke.) Lane Kiffin’s record as a head coach is 5-15. And yet he has, in two-plus months at Tennessee, managed to come off as the biggest smart aleck ever to hit the conference that eventually humbles everybody. It will be great fun watching him lose.

Gene Stallings To Receive Media Award
The Pete Rozelle Award is the longest-tenured award the Touchdown Club gives out. In 2004, the organization began giving out three more awards — the College, Prep, and Bob Roesler Media awards. Gene Stallings, who led Alabama to a national championship in 1992 that was capped off by a 34-13 win over Florida in the Sugar Bowl, will receive the College Award. Former Georgia coach Vince Dooley, Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden, former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville and current Alabama Coach Nick Saban are past winners. “I’m happy to join this list of outstanding coaches and appreciate this more than you know,” Stallings said by telephone.

Are any Alabama coaches walking around without shorts?
You like Alabama, right? Well, do you like the program enough to wear shorts previously worn by a Crimson Tide coach? From 12 bucks to 22 bucks, you can dress like an Alabama coach. Apparently, as seller alabama1294 says on the ad, the shorts come “straight from the Mal Moore center and are 100% the real deal.” But how did he get them?

Les Miles: Target For Alabama Anxiety
Les Miles has been garnering quite a bit of attention lately, out of the state of Alabama. Needless to say, this attention has not been of the favorable variety. It seems there are some blog writers, sympathetic to the Crimson Tide, who have demonstrated a preoccupation with Coach Miles as of late. The obvious question is why?

Jjay: The 5-15 was quoted from an AJC article. I would presume it is Kiffin’s record at the Raiders.
