How much is too much along the gridiron?
When he first heard of David Jason Stinson’s indictment, G.W. Carver head coach Al Pogue felt a bit of a chill go up his spine. Stinson is the Kentucky high school football coach who was indicted on reckless homicide charges a few weeks ago following the death of one of his players, 15-year-old sophomore Max Gilpin, from an apparent heat stroke. The case has caught the attention of high school coaches across the country, especially those in the South, where August practices are often conducted in stifling heat. As Prattville High School head coach Jamie Dubose pointed out, the 94-degree heat index which led to Gilpin’s death is often achieved here by mid-morning in early fall.
Alabama lands Vigor star for Class of 2010
Jalston Fowler, a fullback from Vigor High School in Prichard, has become the University of Alabama’s latest commitment for the 2010 recruiting class. He was selected Class 5A All-State by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. “They recruited me as a running back,” Fowler said. “I’m 6-foot, 245-pounds. I am going to be at Vigor until December. I am going to sit out and practice with the team in the fall. I will go to Alabama in January.” Other similar articles:

Except in Tuscaloosa. While others were cutting back, the Alabama Board of Trustees was approving an $80.6 million expansion of Bryant-Denny Stadium. Foolish? Irresponsible? Dan Fulks, an accountant who at Transylvania (Ky.) University who analyzes athletic finances for the NCAA, doesn’t think so. Fulks believes, sports programs such as Alabama might be recession proof.
