AJC: 5 SEC football questions to be answered in spring
To many Southern sports fans, there are two seasons that count — football season and spring football season. The latter is upon us. And, in the SEC and ACC, there are questions that need to be answered. Among the SEC questions are: 3. How will Alabama replace three-year starter John Parker Wilson? 5. Is new Auburn coach Gene Chizik up to the task in the toughest conference in college football?

Coordinators as GAs will get NCAA’s attention
In Tuscaloosa, Alabama is expected to bring on former Virginia offensive coordinator Mike Groh as a graduate assistant. In Knoxville, Tennessee is reportedly set to make former Minnesota and Syracuse offensive coordinator Mitch Browning a graduate assistant. In Auburn, Gene Chizik brought in his tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator from Iowa State, Scott Fountain, as Football Operations Coordinator. And the NCAA is wondering, “What gives?”

Key offensive spots open on Alabama football team
For the first time in three years the Alabama football team finds itself in the unenviable position of having to replace two of the most important spots on the offensive side of the ball — left tackle and quarterback. Andre Smith and John Parker Wilson, who started a combined 78 games over the past three seasons for the Crimson Tide, have spent the last two months trying to impress NFL scouts in preparation for next month’s draft. In the meantime, coach Nick Saban and his staff must figure out who will take over those positions.

Gene Stallings to be honored by Ronald McDonald House Charities
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama will honor former University of Alabama head football coach Gene Stallings at its seventh Founders Award Dinner on Aug. 20 at Cahaba Grand Conference Center. Stallings coached the Crimson Tide to the 1992 national championship. Beyond his coaching career, Stallings is known as an advocate for children with disabilities, supporting the Tuscaloosa RISE Center. The Founders Award Dinner recognizes people who have made significant contributions to improving the lives of children.

Competition key for Tide’s spring
It only took one spring practice for University of Alabama left guard Mike Johnson to notice the difference. Even though the offensive line lost three starters, and is where the Crimson Tide has the most holes to fill in the lineup, no one was taking anything for granted during last week’s first spring workout, nor could afford to. “Already it’s been really intense,” said Johnson, adding that he was covered in bruises even though no one wore pads.

Roll Tide!
