Tide Tidbits – March 23, 2009

Tide gets back on practice field
Alabama resumes spring practice today with an emphasis on finding offensive starters, but head coach Nick Saban doesn’t want anyone getting complacent. “We want every player to feel like they can compete for a position,” he said. “Just because a guy played a lot last year doesn’t mean he’s entitled to a position. Every player’s got to be productive and every player can improve. You never really arrive in sports.”

Georgia’s Matthew Stafford stands out with NFL Wonderlic score
A poor score on the Wonderlic test can threaten a player’s draft stock. The test, which measures problem-solving ability, features 50 questions and a 12-minute time limit. Test-takers are given one point for each correct answer. This year no player hurt himself terribly with a poor Wonderlic score. Georgia’s Matthew Stafford scored 38 while Andre Smith of Alabama scored 17, which is borderline.

5 QUESTIONS FOR ALABAMA: QB, O-line big issues for Saban
A rested Alabama football team returns from spring break to the practice fields this afternoon for the second of 15 permitted spring workouts. “We still need to develop a sense of purpose as a team, see how hungry this team is, what their drive is, what their standard of excellence is in terms of what they can accomplish as a team,” Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said. Here are five questions awaiting the Crimson Tide before the April 18 A-Day Game:

Nick Saban: “We want to see how hungry this team is…”
Let’s go back into our quote sheet and see what Nick Saban said the last time we talked to him. “We want to see how hungry this team is,” Saban said. “What their drive is, what their commitment to the standard of excellence is in terms of what they can accomplish as a team. I still think that’s part of the development of team chemistry. That’s probably something that we sure hope gets nurtured along here in spring practice.”

Alabama Spring Camp Preview: Players To Watch on Offense
The Alabama football team opens its spring camp for 2009 just over a week ago with drills centering more on conditioning and fundamentals than solving some of the question marks regarding starting positions for the fall football season. Depending on who you ask you’ll get a different answer on which position is going to be the most scrutinized battle this spring.

Has It Stopped: Has Alabama Returned To The Glory Days
Has Alabama’s luck turned? What I mean by changing their luck is all their football trouble. It all started when Alabama got half their wins taken away in 1993 a year after their National Title, then Alabama was put on probation and was not able to go to any bowls for I believe two years, and the we lost Dennis Franchione. We also hired Mike Price who was fired so we forced to hire Mike Shula, and then we lost six times in a row to Auburn. I finally finish this by saying that even though we have received good recruiting classes we have been hustled down by the NCAA for the selling the books incident.

Roll Tide!
