Tide Tidbits – March 30, 2009

Saban still not pleased with Crimson Tide’s progress
Alabama went through its fifth spring practice session Saturday afternoon and head coach Nick Saban continued to show some frustration in developing the 2009 team. While there are several holes to fill on the offensive side of the ball, particularly at quarterback and on the offensive line, his biggest focus has been on chemistry and leadership, two elements that haven’t measured up to his standard as the Crimson Tide concludes its first week of spring practice. “We have made some progress in the last couple practices,” he said, “(but) we’re certainly not where we need to be.”

Tide’s O-line spring priority
Alabama coach Nick Saban’s annual goal is to fit players into his system, not the other way around. Big, physical and effective, the Crimson Tide’s offensive line last year was a perfect fit. Now with three accomplished starters gone, it’s up to a makeshift group of inexperienced offensive linemen to make sure Alabama continues on the path started in 2008. For that to happen, improvement is not a choice but a necessity.

About those 37 recruits Ole Miss signed. …
Ole Miss signed 37 players in its 2009 recruiting class, the third-largest class in the nation. So what is coach Houston Nutt going to do with all those players? After all, NCAA rules allow only 25 scholarship newcomers to join the roster for practice in August. To hear Nutt describe it, the Rebels might not even come up with 25 newcomers.

Virginia Tech Football: 2009 Schedule Preview and Analysis (Part 1)
The Crimson Tide marched into Atlanta last year and completely embarrassed the Clemson Tigers. Alabama has a lot of question marks heading into this game including finding an heir to the throne vacated by quarterback John Parker Wilson and running back Glen Coffee. However, as many question marks as Alabama has, it’s not like their short on talent. The Tide has pulled in the number one recruiting class, according to Rivals.com, the past two years. With the way Tech has played in big games against top ten teams over the past decade, I have a hard time picking VT here even though I think they are the better team. Predictions: Virginia Tech – 13, Alabama – 17
