New linebacker coaches already making their presence felt
You never thought you’d hear James Willis described as the quiet one. There’s a couple of new faces on the coaching staff, a pair of linebacker coaches who can spice up any defensive drill. “Coach is a little loud,” Erik Anders said. “Some people don’t like that but I prefer it,” said senior Cory Reamer, “There’s a difference between somebody being loud and not knowing what they’re doing. He’s loud and you know he knows exactly what’s going on.” See also: Two new additions, Sunseri and Willis, get positive reviews
Spring football: Monday practice report
The Crimson Tide will hold its first scrimmage on Wednesday, which will also signal the midway point of spring practices. For many of the younger players it’ll be their first opportunity to impress the coaches in a live, full-speed setting. “The most important thing we look for in a first scrimmage is how a guy competes,” Coach Nick Saban said. “A guy who plays hard, doesn’t get frustrated, is relentless, coming back and playing is important to him, they have the right plan and really get after it. The number two things is the consistency and performance, that level that everyone has been able to achieve when they’re out there on their own.”
New Alabama coach Anthony Grant: “I am a Nick Saban fan, and I love college football.”
“I am a Nick Saban fan,” said Grant, of the guy who helped recruit him for this job. “I love college football. When my son saw the stadium his eyes lit up. I think he was more excited when he saw the football stadium than he was when he saw the basketball stadium.”
Tide linebackers switching gears
For the University of Alabama linebacker unit, every day is sort of like getting ready for a track race. They show up and check their lane assignments for practice. Then it’s ready, set, go. ‘It changes every day, it changes every drill, it changed from every period,’ Cory Reamer said. ‘That’s how it is in spring. We have a few guys who can flop around and play different positions. We’ll find out tomorrow where I’m at, and then the next day it may change again, and the day after that. You never know.’
Alabama football assistant coaches receive raises
The UA system board of trustees unanimously approved raises and extensions Monday for seven Alabama assistant football coaches and initial contracts for two offseason hires. Coach Nick Saban’s on-field staff will make $2.685 million for the 2009 season, up from roughly $2.4 million the previous year, per figures presented by UA athletics director Mal Moore to trustee members on Monday’s conference call.
