Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer, on the Alabama game: “We’re aware of the challenge we’ve got.”
So, before the Hokies finish up their spring practice, it was a good opportunity to jump on an ACC teleconference and check in with Tech coach Frank Beamer. Mainly, what I wanted to know was… How much focus has been on Alabama? “I think any time you play a national program,” Beamer continued, “a quality program like Alabama, a program that is ranked as high as they were last year, I think that our players are excited. I know our fans are. Been hearing some things about ticket sales and there’s no question they’re excited about opening up with Alabama there in Atlanta.”
Touted QB Phillip Sims commits to Crimson Tide
Chesapeake, Va., quarterback Phillip Sims made a surprise commitment tonight to Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain, instantly becoming one of the featured additions to the Crimson Tide’s expected 2010 signing class. “I am solid with my decision,” Sims told BamaOnline.com. “Alabama is where I am going.” Rivals.com already has Sims rated as a four-star prospect ranked No. 52 in the nation. Scout.com has him as the 29th-best recruit. See also: It’s a Tidewater thing
Saban: Three questions as coach enters his third season
Three questions for Alabama coach Nick Saban as he enters his third season: 1. In some preseason polls, Alabama is ranked in the top five. How do you manage those expectations entering the fall? 2. How is the campus legend known as “Mount Cody” progressing? 3. Alabama missed out on a chance to play for the national championship game after losing to Florida in the Southeastern Conference championship game. Then the Tide lost to Utah in the Sugar Bowl. What was learned in the way the season ended?
Not just a ‘game’for QBs
A-Day scrimmages at Bama, Auburn could be places where starting job won, lost. Two days from now, roughly two hours away from each other, two teams with one major question will likely only give a partial answer to their fans. The question: Who’s going to be the starting quarterback this fall at Alabama and Auburn? Saturday, of course, is A-Day for both the Crimson Tide and Tigers. Alabama is treating it like a real game, with all of the bells and whistles (ESPN is televising with Chris Fowler, Todd Blackledge and Wendi Nix are commentating).
