Tide Tidbits – April 24, 2009

‘Bama regains NFL draft presence
Phil Savage watched the Alabama-LSU game a couple of years ago and sensed a resurgence on the way for the Crimson Tide. On the field? Sure. In the NFL draft, too. “I turned to some friends and said, ‘Take a good look at LSU because that’s what Alabama’s going to look like in due time,’” said Savage, a former Cleveland Browns general manager. “I think they’re well on their way to looking like that athleticism and size-wise.”

Saban: Andre Smith a “good guy” and player
Alabama coach Nick Saban doesn’t want NFL types to get the wrong idea about Andre Smith. The All-America left tackle’s college career ended with a suspension, followed by a criticized decision to leave the NFL combine unannounced and the firing of his agent. Before all that, Smith was an instant star on the field who started at left tackle since his first game as a freshman and stayed out of trouble. Saban is one of the Outland Tropy winner’s advocates. He said Smith has good character, attitude and work ethic.

Alabama safety Rashad Johnson shows off his brain as NFL draft nears
The NFL combine and the Alabama pro day workouts were nice, but Tide safety Rashad Johnson believes it was another place that allowed him to really show NFL scouts what he’s made of — the film room. “You got an opportunity to go in the film room and sit down and explain what you did (in college), and also to let them know how fast I can catch on to what they do,” said Johnson, projected by many analysts to be a second- or third-round pick in the draft this weekend. “I think it helped me a lot.”

OUR VIEW: The University of Alabama System is feeling the pain of the recession
What kind of team could Coach Nick Saban field if the football program’s budget were slashed because of the recession? If he had to lay off some coaches and staff? If he couldn’t spend as much money going after top recruits? Would the Crimson Tide be able to meet fans’ heady expectations? Those are questions worth pondering, not just for fans of University of Alabama football, but for fans of the University of Alabama System. That’s because the system finds itself in a money crunch courtesy of the national recession. Last week, Chancellor Malcolm Portera told the board of trustees the three-campus system likely will see its state funding reduced by nearly a quarter compared with a year ago.

Top kicker talks Tide visit
Michael Palardy, kicker from Ft. Lauderdale-St. Thomas Aquinas, Fla., is considered one of the top kickers in the country. Palardy took a first visit to the University of Alabama and came away more than impressed. He has also received big news concerning post-season play.

Best of the rest:

Roll Tide!
