Tide Tidbits – April 7, 2009

Washington hopes to be a force on the pass rush
In many ways, this has been a long time coming for Lorenzo Washington. There was the extra year at Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia to become academically eligible. Then a redshirt season followed by a detour to nose guard where he started 12 of 13 games in 2007 despite it not being his ideal position. Finally, after the arrival and emergence of Terrence Cody, the native of Loganville, Ga. went back to defensive end and behind Bobby Greenwood figured prominently in last year’s rotation. Now, finally, he’s found a home as a starting end.

Finebaum: Even Saban can’t control expectations
Is Nick Saban losing his grip? Is the overpowering pressure of following last year’s perfect 12-0 regular season and No. 1 ranking getting to Mr. SMPC (Sport’s Most Powerful Coach, according to Forbes)? Could a major media meltdown be just around the corner? With Saban, it’s always problematic to peer inside that opaque shield he wears attached to his face. However, one thing he has seemingly always been able to control in Tuscaloosa — expectations of the fan base — could possibly be slipping away. Once this happens, it can be difficult to get the genie back in the bottle.

OL recruit Chad Lindsay becomes Alabama’s sixth commitment
Alabama’s commitment list is starting to build. Offensive lineman Chad Lindsay said at a news conference in The Woodlands, Texas, that he will sign with the Crimson Tide. He picked Alabama over offers from finalist LSU, along with Georgia, Florida State, Auburn, and others. “I like the coaches a lot,” Lindsay told TiderInsider.com’s recruiting gurus. “I also like the tradition that Alabama has. I like the stadium a lot, too. Alabama has a great academic center, too. That really caught my attention.”

How Tim Tebow’s Choice Changed Alabama: Where Would We Be Now?
When Tim Tebow was coming out of Neis High School in Florida, he was recruited by some of the top colleges in the nation. He narrowed it down to two schools: Alabama and Florida. Both schools would have given anything to get him. Unfortunately for Alabama fans, Florida got him. I have now personally seen the things Tim Tebow can do on a football field. Every time I see him play, the one and only thing that runs through my mind is: where would Alabama be if they would have signed Tim Tebow? Another thing in the back in my mind is: how come he didn’t sign with Alabama?

Tight ends a “staple” again for Crimson Tide
Colin Peek left a program set to abandon his tight end position for one that seemingly can’t do without it. Associated PressTight end transfer Colin Peek started 11 games in 2007 for Georgia Tech. It took him less than one game to be certain he’d made a good choice. Ineligible as a transfer from Georgia Tech, Peek watched as Alabama routed Clemson in August and tight end Nick Walker snagged a game-high seven catches. Other similar articles:

Monday practice report
Guard Mike Johnson (ankle) was on an exercise bike for the second straight practice, next to running back Mark Ingram (hamstring). Getting extra reps in his absence are Brian Motley and Barrett Jones. Wide receiver Chris Jackson (toe) returned to practice after missing Saturday. Also wearing black signaling no contact were wide receiver Earl Alexander (shoulder) and running back Roy Upchurch (neck).
