Meyer tops SEC coaches list, but Saban 5th?
2009 rankings of SEC football coaches. As always, worst ones first.
12. Gene Chizik, Auburn: Quite possibly the easiest last-place selection since Ed Orgeron.
5. Nick Saban, Alabama: When I first started running through these rankings a couple of weeks ago, I had Saban up in the No. 2 slot and was trying to figure out a way to put him at the top.
SEC West Missed a Chance to Establish a Dominant Team, But Bama is Back Now!
In 1996, Gene Stallings stepped down as the head coach at Alabama, and the problems followed. A cavalcade of coaches came and went since then with much noted fanfare and years of probation and recovery also. That was the time for the SEC West to establish a new dominant team. From the beginning of the SEC Championship series, Florida has dominated the East. In most years the were not just the team to beat for the SEC, but one of the top programs in the nation. From the inception of the Western Division until Gene Stallings’ departure, Alabama had won or shared the Western title four out of those five years. Since Stallings’ departure, they won the division only once out the ten years prior to Saban’s arrival.
Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin’s got one chance to make a good first impression
This Tuesday at the Sandestin Hilton in Destin, Fla., the mood for a season could be set when newcomer Lane Kiffin meets his fellow coaches at the SEC spring meetings. Kiffin will either get a reprieve for coming in with guns blazing as the new kid on the block or he will get a cold shoulder from the coaches he has called out.
Roll Tide!
