Tide Tidbits – June 22, 2009

It’s time Tide resurrects past rivalries
Alabama is doing its part to at least play decent opposition. UA has played three straight years of neutral-site games, culminating in 11 weeks with the Alabama-Virginia Tech game in Atlanta. He [Saban] talked about future games with the elite teams in college football, perhaps even making it a part of a national series. It would require cooperation from CBS (which holds the Southeastern Conference’s television rights) and ABC (the parent company of ESPN, which also has a contractual stake in the SEC along with almost everyone else.) But it would be great to see such games in the early season.

Alabama vs. Virginia Tech: Previewing the Defense
When you hear Alabama vs. Virginia Tech, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? For me it’s the tough, physical defenses. Alabama and Virginia Tech both had great defenses last year and will have great ones thing year. Virginia Tech’s Bud Foster is the best defensive coordinator in the country and provides VT with an advantage, but is it enough?

Ohio State and USC stay on top, Tide moves up
In the annual Tuscaloosa News’ Best College Football Rankings, which attempt to measure the nation’s top programs every way imaginable, there’s no change at the top this year. Ohio State is No. 1, followed by Southern California, just like 2008. After them, though, things are vastly different in terms of those rising and falling. It begins at No. 3, where Alabama has improved the most of any program since Nick Saban arrived at the Capstone. On the other end of the spectrum, Michigan has dropped to No. 5, Notre Dame is another subpar season away from being outside the top 10, and no program has fallen more than Auburn.

PRAVDA: We don’t cheat for Auburn!

Phillip Marshall is outraged Alabama Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban would expose the corruption in ESPN, YAHOO/Rivals and Scout’s business model—a model where fans run websites and attempt to help their teams recruit while pocketing loads of money by being homers. Marshall wrote an attack piece on his blog at Auburn Undercover in response to this outrage.

Roll Tide!

Phillip marshall has been an auburn homer since he graduated from the place. I have never put much stock in what Marshall says. I am sure that anyone who has read more than 10 things Marshall has wrote can see his not-so-hidden agenda.
I suppose I could get upset about it. But the first rule of thumb is “consider the source.” and Mr. marshall is, was, and always be a biased writer.

Almightytmc1: I was actually glad when Marshall went to work for the Auburn site – no one will confuse him with a real journalist there. :)

    Roll Tide,
