Kirby Smart: “Our biggest concern is senior leadership, but…”
An Alabama assistant coach who works under Nick Saban actually spoke to reporters. It’s a rare event, so it’s worth noting. Smart was unleashed upon local media in Rome, Ga., for Scout.com’s first annual College Football Kickoff dinner. Predictably, because it was a recruiting event, both spoke gushingly about the talent in Georgia. Smart did make at least one interesting comment, “We are expecting a lot out of a lot of guys,” Smart told the paper. “Our biggest concern is senior leadership, but James Carpenter and Robby Green have been two players who’ve stepped up in the spring and impressed at their positions.”
Sad to say, but raise makes sense
Even when layoffs and bankruptcies are all too common, the rich are still getting richer. Alabama football coach Nick Saban reportedly will soon receive a contract extension and raise. That’s right, a raise. The same Nick Saban whose original contract at Alabama caused NCAA president Myles Brand to wonder, “Is this a proper approach within an academic context?” Of the $4 million or so that Saban makes each year, $225,000 is the base salary. The rest comes from “commercial activities,” or money tied to marketing.
Behind Enemy Lines Trapped with Gators, Seminoles, and Hurricanes
Embedded with a small force behind enemy lines, we survive while surrounded by followers of charismatic leaders like Urban Myer, Bobby Bowden, and Randy Shannon. Believers in another way of life, we look to each other for strength and fellowship. Passing on the street or in daily duties, we greet each other with ROLL TIDE. OK, I’ll admit to a small amount of hyperbole, but only a small amount. If you don’t live within five hundred miles of your favorite college football team, you are surrounded by the enemy. Unless it’s Texas of course, because five hundred miles in any direction and you are still in Texas. Living in Florida is not easy being an Alabama fan.
Newsome is delighted with UA growth
As he sat in the clubhouse at the Ol’ Colony Golf Course on Saturday, Ozzie Newsome wore the smile of a man who is enjoying his life. At 53 years old, Newsome has accomplished everything he ever set out to do. He is a beloved former University of Alabama football player. His bust resides in the National Football League’s Hall of Fame from his career as a tight end with the Cleveland Browns. He won a Super Bowl as an executive with the Baltimore Ravens in 2000. He became the NFL’s first African-American general manager with the Ravens in 2002.
