Tide Tidbits – July 10, 2009

SEC preview: Ranking the head coaches
2. Nick Saban, Alabama, 3rd season: You must be a pretty good coach if you can pile up nicknames. While some prefer to call him “Coach Satan”, Crimson Tide Nation prefers St. Nick after he led Alabama last year to a 12-2 record, 8-0 in the SEC, and back in the national title picture. Saban is as good a recruiter as they come and has a national championship from LSU. You don’t have to be well liked to be held in high esteem in this league. Winning is the ultimate measure, and Saban has done plenty of that.

Crimson Tide signees on track at junior college
Three University of Alabama football signees are on a fast track at East Mississippi Community College and could all enroll at the Capstone in time to take part in spring practice next year. Defensive lineman Quinton Dial, a part of the Crimson Tide’s top-ranked 2009 recruiting class, enrolled at the junior college in Scooba, Miss., at the end of May and is taking summer classes while working out to prepare for the fall season. He is on a schedule that could allow him to graduate in December and enroll at Alabama next spring with three years of eligibility remaining. Two signees who were part of Alabama’s No. 1-ranked class in 2008, defensive lineman Brandon Lewis and linebacker Devonta Bolton, played last season and are also expected to graduate this year, East Mississippi head coach Buddy Stephens said.

The SEC’s 10 most powerful people
2. Nick Saban, Alabama football coach: His grip on the state of Alabama is only strengthening. He’s redefined the cold and robotic coaching persona. He’s become a recruiting innovator with the Webcam loophole. He’s the first football coach to grace the cover of Forbes Magazine. Soon enough, the former LSU coach could become the conference’s first to win a national football title at two schools.
UF tops Dooley Decimal list
We aren’t sure what to think about these new coaches which makes this summer’s annual rankings of the football programs a little tougher than usual. 2. Alabama: Again, this is not based on the strength of the team but of the program. I think Alabama is a 9-3 team this season, but look at everything else. Nick Saban was a quarter away from playing for a national title last year. The facilities are constantly being upgraded, and no team in the conference has the tradition of Alabama. The fan support is maniacal. You could make an argument Florida and Alabama could be 1-2 in the country not just in the conference.

Tide Quarterback Position Analysis
This is a look at the Alabama quarterback situation heading into the 2009 Crimson Tide football season. Although other quarterback candidates, including Morgan Ogilvie, this analysis focuses on the three who have the most practice snaps, plus one incoming quarterback.

Rashad Johnson signs with Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals have signed third-round draft pick Rashad Johnson to a three-year contract. The 5-foot-11, 203-pound safety from Alabama was the 95th selection overall. Johnson, a walk-on out of high school, was a leader of the powerful Crimson Tide defense and is expected to fight for the backup role behind Adrian Wilson and Antrel Rolle and for a spot in the Cardinals’ “nickel” defense.
