Tide Tidbits – July 14, 2009

Looking at quarterbacks and the No. 12
Sometimes one number equates to success at a certain position on a football team. With the University of Alabama, that number is 12 and the position is quarterback. This year a new No. 12 will lead the Crimson Tide at the signal caller position, inspiring the question: How did Greg McElroy get that number? Is there a significance … is it a sacred jersey only few are glorified to wear? Is the No. 12 the holy grail of jerseys at Alabama? “The only number I can remember having any significance is No. 54. Coaches gave that number to defensive players because it was Lee Roy Jordan’s.” said Tyler Watts, former quarterback for the Crimson Tide.

A College Football Tradition Comes to an End as The “Three Daves” Are Let Go
This fall, due to the new television contracts negotiated by the SEC, one tradition of our autumn Saturdays falls by the wayside. No longer will SEC football fans see football through the eyes of “The Three Daves”—Dave Neal, Dave Archer, and Dave Baker. Often criticized, and in some cases rightfully so, they’ve become a part of SEC football as much as some of the other traditions. Their weekly reports from different venues around the SEC are just as much a part of our lives as famed ESPN’s GameDay has become a must see for most college football fans.

Fasten your seatbelts: Ole Miss trainwreck ahead on Rebel Railway
Ole Miss fans had better be wearing seat belts. They better have the sash over their shoulders. They better make sure the frontal air bags are in working order. Why? Because this Ole Miss train is about to run off the track. The biggest crowd in Oxford this year won’t be drinking and carrying on at the Grove before the Alabama game. It will be later in the season as fans gather to rubberneck the Ole Miss trainwreck. But there is a major problem for the Rebels and their quest to take on Florida in the SEC Championship Game. You can’t get to Atlanta from Oxford. It’s not going to happen. Why not? Because they’re Ole Miss.

Post-Spring Previews: Alabama
After taking on Kentucky at home, Carolina has to travel to Tuscaloosa to take on Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide. For all the love going towards Ole Miss this off season, this game against ‘Bama will most likely be the second most difficult game on the schedule, IMO. This is a team that has the tools and coach to go all the way, despite the lackluster finish to last season and the fact that they lost a few offensive play makers like John Parker Wilson and Glen Coffee. A win would be an unqualified upset for us, even if we turn out to have a pretty solid team.

Roll Tide!
