Gone are the days when coaches made less than the school prez
Paul Bryant knew a thing or two about winning. After all, he did it 323 times. In 38 years as a head coach, he had only one losing season. And by the time his 25-year run at Alabama was done, the Bear had six national championships and 10 outright Southeastern Conference titles on his resume. So in the current economic climate, what would he be paid? If the legendary coach were alive today and prowling the sidelines at his alma mater, he’d be making $487,619 per year. Because UA president Robert Witt makes $487,620. Bryant, who could’ve named his salary, thought it unseemly for a coach to make more money than a school president.
Tide Recruiting Machine Rolls On
When Victor Beasley attended his first football camp at the University of Alabama this past spring, he went into it having little idea what to expect. Growing up the son of a former Auburn football player hadn’t lent to him spending a great deal of time following the Crimson Tide. He’d gained an interest the previous fall after attending a few games and being amazed by the game day atmosphere. Beasley left Tuscaloosa with an entirely new perspective naming the Tide the leader for his signature this coming February. “The difference in Alabama and everyone else that is recruiting me is that Alabama is building relationships with me. They are not gimmicky.
Tide vs. Hokies; Prediction on 2009 Match-up
This first week match up will be between ACC Coastal Division favorite, Virginia Tech, and SEC West Division favorite, Alabama. Most sports gurus are going with Bama in this game in Atlanta. For me, this game is as much about the off season because of the timing. I think a lot of people are going to make the mistake of thinking Virginia Tech is going to pull a Clemson and come out flat.
2009 Alabama Defense Will Roll With It’s Linebackers
When the Tide takes the field against the Virginia Tech Hokies they’ll be facing a Tech team that loves to run the ball. The Alabama front line’s job will be to slow them down as much as possible allowing the linebacking corp to fill run gaps and make plays. If the Tide is successful at doing that chances are they will open their season with a win in the Georgia Dome for the second year in a row.
Top 25 teams: No. 6 Alabama Crimson Tide
Returning nine starters from a unit that ranked third in total defense in 2008 will make the Tide a tough team to face in 2009. The return of first-team All-SEC selection Terrence Cody at defensive tackle will give Alabama’s run defense a big boost. Sophomore wide receiver Julio Jones came in as a heralded recruit and did not disappoint. Jones started all 14 games his freshman season and fell just short of 1,000 yards receiving while averaging almost 16 yards per catch.
Roll Tide!
