Tide Tidbits – July 16, 2009

Alabama will win the wild, wild SEC West
Alabama will be a different team, especially on offense, but will still find a way to get to Atlanta on Dec. 5. Let’s start with the offense. Last season Alabama could pretty much wear opponents down by steamrolling them with that huge offensive line. This season, behind new QB Greg McElroy, Alabama will have to show a little more finesse on offense. There is plenty of talent on that side of the ball if the offensive line comes together. The reason I like Alabama in this division is that that Tide is not going to need that many points to win. The defense is that good. Nine starters return and, yes, Alabama will miss the exceptional leadership of safety Rashad Johnson. But the linebackers (Rolando McClain, Dont’a Hightower) are great and NG Terrence Cody is now in shape and ready to play his best football.

Thursday Thoughts About the SEC and the Funny Things in It
At Alabama this week, the big news was Greg McElroy just got back from the Peyton Manning Passing Academy where he took the National big names to school and whipped Colt McCoy of Texas, Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford, Ole Miss phenomenon Jevan Snead, and others in passing drills. And to think there were some ‘Bama fans that had as little faith in Greg. Many of these are the same people who by the end of year will be saying, “I knew it all along, that McElroy’s the best thing to happen to us since Joe Namath.” We do that kind of thing at Alabama.

Who’s overrated in the SEC West?
LSU and Ole Miss = Overrated. That’s according to Olin Buchanan of Rivals.com, who not only rains on the Bayou Bengals and Rebels but points out they are two of the nation’s “possibly overrated” teams. I’m just not understanding all the love Les Miles and the boys are getting. As we’ve pointed out time and again, LSU’s 3-5 SEC mark last year was the worst in SEC history for a defending national champion.

Alabama reserve Chris Jackson receives permission to talk to other schools, may transfer
Alabama reserve receiver/defensive back Chris Jackson wants to play. And while his former offensive coordinator at Henry County (Ga.) High Rex Robertson said Jackson “loves Alabama,” he understands that the opportunities for playing time may not be forthcoming. With that in mind, Jackson has been granted permission to speak with other schools with the strong possibility that he’ll transfer from the Crimson Tide. The sophomore made six tackles on special teams last season.

Roll Tide!
