Alabama places 9 on SEC preseason coaches’ team
Defending SEC and national champion Florida Gators had a league-high 16 representatives on the 2008 All-Southeastern Conference Coaches’ Football Team, while LSU had 10 total selections and defending Western Division Champion Alabama and Georgia had nine each, the league office announced on Thursday. There were only three unanimous selections to this year’s All-SEC pre-season squad – LSU offensive lineman Ciron Black, Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones and Tennessee defensive back Eric Berry. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players, thus a unanimous selection earns 11 of 12 first-team votes.
Alabama LB Brandon Fanney has requested permission to transfer…
Alabama linebacker Brandon Fanney has been granted permission to transfer from UA, a source told The News. It is not clear where Fanney is looking or if he has spoken with teams. A starter at Jack linebacker in 2008, Fanney was third on the team with 66 tackles — nine for a loss — but just one sack. He was not available for comment. Fanney was suspended along with recently departed Prince Hall during the beginning of spring practice.
Meyer doubts Utah could survive SEC grind
Meyer gave a high-energy speech for about 90 minutes, devoting most of his time to his philosophies and approaches to coaching — an approach that’s obviously served the three-time National Coach of the Year quite well. Afterward in his media Q&A, I asked him about Utah’s fight to get the Mountain West Conference into the BCS. Meyer, of course, led the Utes to 12-0 season in 2004 — including a win over Pittsburgh in the Fiesta Bowl in his final game before taking the Florida job. “I know (Utah Senator) Orrin Hatch,” Meyer said. “They’re doing what they’re supposed to do. They’re fighting for their team and their state and I can’t argue with them. The Utah team (last) year and the Utah team we had in ’04, I don’t think they can survive the grind of the SEC.”
Alabama Crimson Tide: Being a Fan Provides a Lifetime of Memories
As a kid, you don’t always realize at the time something happens the effects that they’re likely to have on your life later on down the line.
I can vaguely remember, as a young boy, gathering together in the living room in front of our TV, with my Dad, a couple of Uncles, and my older brothers, to watch Alabama take on Notre Dame. To them, the game seemed to be the single most important thing happening at the time, bar none. They were all on the edge of their seats living every moment right up until the end, a Notre Dame victory that seemed to take the air out of everyone in the room. I couldn’t comprehend at the time why this game seemed to have such importance to the grown-ups around me, I’m pretty sure it was at that moment that the seeds of my love for college football, and most importantly the University of Alabama, were planted.
Roll Tide!
