Tide Tidbits – July 23, 2009

As SEC Media Days goes on, what can we learn about Alabama?
We just picked up our copy of the Crimson Tide’s media guide, and that, coupled with a few other things, answers a few questions. A bunch of players have left the team since the spring, and the official roster reflects four changes. Lineman Evan Cardwell, and linebackers Brandon Fanney, Jennings Hester, and Charlie Kirschman are not on it. All had reportedly been slated for departures before their eligibility ran out. The roster also features the info on what some freshmen are wearing: WR Kenny Bell 7, WR Michael Bowman 88, OL D.J. Fluker 76, LB Nico Johnson 35, DB Dre Kirkpatrick 21, QB AJ McCarron 10, LB Tana Patrick 2, RB Trent Richardson 3

SEC announces initial TV schedule
The SEC announced its television schedule for the first three weeks of the 2009-10 season. Sat. Sept. 5 Alabama vs. Virginia Tech ABC 8:00 ET; Sat. Sept. 12 Florida International at Alabama Inst. PPV 7:00 ET; Sat. Sept. 19 North Texas at Alabama ERT/SEC Network 12:21 ET.

Tight end Brian Vogler commits to Alabama
Tight end Brian Vogler announced a commitment to the Crimson Tide this morning, becoming the 17th verbal to Alabama’s expected 2010 signing class. Vogler, who stands 6-foot-7 and nearly 250 pounds, chose Alabama over finalist Oklahoma and a host of other scholarship offers. He is rated No. 70 on the Press-Register’s Super Southeast 120. Rivals has Vogler as the nation’s sixth-best tight end prospect.

What Does Alabama Do with 13 Great Linebackers?
The Alabama coaching staff finally has plenty of talent to work with. Two back-to-back No. 1 recruiting seasons will do that to a team. So what do you do when you have 13 linebackers all hungry for some hits? Nick Saban as head coach, Kirby Smart as defensive coordinator, and James Williams and Sal Sunseri as linebacker coaches will have something to do and something to say about who’ll play where and for how long, but coach Bobby Williams will also benefit. Williams is the special teams coach, and he will get a lot of help from the ones with limited playing time at linebacker. “You like guys who can run and like to hit on your kickoff and punt teams,” Saban said earlier this year. “We’ve got some good linebackers who should be able to help us with our special teams who certainly like to hit.”
