Alabama news and notes from SEC media days
To Alabama coach Nick Saban, the latest rash of departures from his team had little to do with football performance. “None of these players are leaving because of the kind of football players they are, from our standpoint,” Saban said. Mike Johnson said. “We have such great players coming in these days, especially these last two recruiting classes, it’s going to be tough for some people to get playing time. You’ve got to either be willing to battle it out and make your mark or go somewhere else. That’s the message he’s kind of conveyed: If you’re not willing to do it, then take off.” The top offensive newcomer to catch McClain’s eye during offseason workouts is former St. Paul’s quarterback AJ McCarron. “That guy, he’s good,” McClain said. “He has great arm, a great release. He goes through his reads pretty good also. His arm stood out to me a lot. His ability to throw the ball deep is pretty good.”
Corey Grant commits to Alabama
Corey Grant, Scout.com four-star running back from Opelika High School, committed to the Univeristy of Alabama Crimson Tide over two other SEC schools, Auburn and Florida. Grant held a press conference Thursday at Opelika High to announce his college choice. Grant is rated as the No. 6 player in the state by The Tuscaloosa News. Alabama has now secured commitments from five of the top six players in the state. C.J. Mosley, Scout.com four-star outside linebacker from Theodore High School, is undecided but has Alabama and Auburn even in the race for his signature.
Alabama players, Saban see marquee matchup with Virginia Tech as springboard for success
Nick Saban has a secret. Okay, maybe not a secret. But definitely a fail-safe way to start your season off right. Skip the cupcakes and head straight to the heavy hitters. “I think it helps your offseason,” said Saban, whose Crimson Tide started its undefeated 2008 regular season with a 34-10 blowout win over Clemson in Atlanta. On Sept. 5, Alabama will face Virginia Tech in another marquee matchup in the same venue. With such a high-profile game on the schedule right out of the gates, Saban said the players find it easier to prepare. With the team’s intensity raised at the beginning of the season, the tone is set for the rest of the year — win, lose or draw.
Saban talks McElroy, offensive voids
Have any quarterback questions for Nick Saban? Don’t ask the Alabama football coach about Greg McElroy. But how the rising junior will perform, that has less to do with McElroy than some would think. That’s how Saban sees it, at least. “Every question you ask me about quarterback will come down to this group,” Saban said. The group Saban is referring to? It’s the big guys on the offensive line. According to the third-year Crimson Tide coach, how a revamped offensive line develops will determine just how successful McElroy will be in his first season as starting quarterback.
