Athlon: The Tide has turned in Alabama
They crave their football in Alabama. In a state where radio stations count down the hundreds of days until the first kickoff, Alabama hands out the state’s coveted Iron Bowl football trophy at a basketball game. So as the winning Iron Bowl coach, Nick Saban took the microphone last March before a sold-out Alabama-Auburn basketball crowd in Tuscaloosa to accept the adulation for beating Auburn. “This is an honor to have this trophy in our possession this year,” Saban told the crowd, “and for many years to come.” “I think Auburn’s got a big mountain to climb,” says former Dallas Cowboys executive Gil Brandt, who closely follows Saban’s career and whose son attends Auburn. “It’s one thing if you’re competing against somebody. But it’s another thing if you’re competing against somebody who is very good at what he does. Nick is as good as it gets at what he does.”
Alabama Fans Have No Reason to Fear the Ole Miss Game in 2009
I’ve sat and read the preseason polls over the last few months and have certainly been intrigued by the “love” the Ole Miss Rebel football team has been receiving. Please, don’t get me wrong. I do understand where it’s coming from—and I don’t mean from whom. Specifically, I don’t buy that Alabama has a reason to fear the Rebels, and there’s no reason as well for fans to look at the matchup on October 10 with any trepidation.
Tide signee Michael Bowman cleared to enroll for summer classes
BamaOnline.com is reporting today that Alabama wide receiver signee Michael Bowman has academically qualified and been approved by the NCAA Clearinghouse in time to enroll for second summer session classes at UA. Bowman will reportedly join Gadsden cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick as a late summer enrollee. Kirkpatrick, like Bowman, was held up by late academic hurdles.
Top 5 SEC Targets For 2010
I looked across the nation to find the top five players that are strongly considering SEC schools. To make the list, the prospect must be giving an SEC school serious consideration for his college future. 1. Lache Seastrunk — Temple (Texas) High School; 2. Jeff Luc — Treasure Coast High School, Port St. Lucie, Florida; 3. Marcus Lattimore — Byrnes High School, Duncan, South Carolina; 4. Christian Green — Tampa (Florida) Catholic High School; and 5. JR Ferguson — Hargrave Military Academy, Chatham, Virginia
Joe Everyguy’s Story of Making It in Division I-A Football
Joe Everybody is a player made up from a combination of many of the players I’ve talked to over the years. It tells the story of someone coming in and trying to make it in Big Time football. “What?” angrily replied Joe when he heard the news from his friend that Scout.com had just rated him a three star prospect. “I was the 2A defensive player of the year my Jr. year! I lead our division in tackles and sacks and you’re telling me that warrants only three stars?” “It ain’t you,” his friend consoled. “They don’t know you that well. It’s not like our school’s got any exposure or clout. Maybe it’s the fact that nobody from Mill Creek has ever been rated high before, but whatever Dude, come some of those summer camps, the coaches will see what you got.”
Roll Tide!
