Tide Tidbits – July 5, 2009

Alabama Crimson Tide 2009 Football Season Preview
2008 was a great year for the Alabama Crimson Tide as a whole. Let’s forget how the season ended for a minute and just step back and admire how the first twelve games of the season turned out. Then again, maybe let’s not think about the first twelve, because for most of us the results of those first twelve had us thinking lightning could strike and we could bring home national title number 13. Our first in a long, hard, painful 16 years. But that’s our nature as Alabama football fans. We love our college football, and we always think there’s a chance that we could go all the way when the season starts. So as this new college football season approaches, let’s forget about how the season ended, try to look at the positive performances we got out of many returning players during the regular season in 2008, and just get excited for what’s ahead.

Hey Alabama Fans, Watch Out for Lacy and McCarron: Could They Be Greats?
Nick Saban has always had the ability to recruit some of the best high school athletes in the game of college football. This trend carried over into the 2009 recruiting class. The Tide ranks first among all teams in landing four five-star players and 14 four-star players. They have accumulated 2,786 points and SEC opponent LSU is in second with 2,581. Nick Saban is no doubt a coach most all high school players would love to play for. With that being said, I have two great players who are not the highest rated commits but they can make a great impact for Alabama in the years to come.

Top recruit’s future set at Alabama
Behind somewhat secluded Stanhope Elmore High School, one can’t help but be impressed with the new fixtures, which appear to be as sturdy as the materials used in their construction. But when DeMarcus Milliner rounds the corner, the comparisons really begin: chiseled, rugged and imposing. He’s that impressive, even when barely moving. Factor in that he’s both incredibly fast and seemingly focussed, and it’s easy to see why the 6-foot-1, 185-pound defensive back is the school’s most sought-after football recruit ever. He also tops The Tuscaloosa News’ annual Alabama Most Wanted ranking of the state’s top 50 football prospects.

Hey Alabama Fans, Watch Out For the O—line: This Might Be a Problem!
All Alabama fans know the story as I’m sure you have heard a lot of talk lately about how the Bama O-line is going to have a ton of problems in ’09. Yes, we are going to have our share of problems with the O-line but not for the reasons people are saying. Last season the Alabama offensive line was very strong, quick and able to control the line of scrimmage. All three of these might pose a problem for the Tide next year. We lost key players in center Antonie Caldwell and left tackle Andre Smith both who entered into the NFL draft after the end of the ’08 season. We have a few guys who could try and fill both of these guys shoes but trust me this will be no easy task.

Tracking the attrition for Crimson Tide football …
We’ve officially entered the annual season of attrition for Alabama’s football program. Soon after yesterday’s report that Alabama center Evan Cardwell is not expected back next season, BamaOnline.com has confirmed that junior linebacker Charlie Kirschman will also not be back for the 2009 season. Neither departure was a surprise. Kirschman earned his undergraduate degree in May, and sources had previously indicated he was considering the move away from football.

Roll Tide!
