Tide Tidbits – October 16, 2009

Tide’s resilient Reamer disrupts the competition and dismisses the doubters
A twice-injured knee was mending. The Alabama coaches who recruited him were gone. Impressive new players were arriving. Cory Reamer could have thought he was doomed. Nick Saban was in as the Crimson Tide’s head coach. Mike Shula was out. And, oh, did we mention that Reamer was moving from safety to linebacker? Reamer should have thought he was doomed. “There’s a place for players like Cory Reamer,” said Rush Propst, who coached Reamer at Hoover and now coaches at Colquitt County High School in Moultrie, Ga. They just know how to play the game. The kid’s always had a little of that attitude, `Well, they don’t think I’m that good. I’m just going to show’em.’ He was always playing with a chip on his shoulder.”

Gamecocks safety brings energy, fistful of tickets to homecoming
Teammates haven’t been fleeing from South Carolina’s Darian Stewart, mostly because they know he’ll catch them anyway. After all, as a three-year starter at safety, Stewart knows how to catch those who don’t want to be caught. Usually, though, it’s ball carriers he’s chasing. This week, it’s teammates who have extra tickets to Saturday’s game at No. 2 Alabama. “They’re pretty cool about it,” Stewart said. “They’re happy for me to get a chance to go back to my home state to get to play.” It’s about time for Stewart, who played at Lee High in Huntsville. Now a senior with the Gamecocks, Stewart will be playing in his home state for the first time since in high school. “I’m very excited,” he said. “It’s a wonderful feeling.”

Casual homecoming weekend takes on a more serious tone
Steve Spurrier a homecoming date? Hosting one of the most successful coaches in SEC history doesn’t sound ideal and Alabama officials certainly didn’t set out to host such a meaningful game on what is traditionally a casual weekend. Scheduling just didn’t cooperate this year, said Alabama Director of Alumni Affairs Pat Whetstone. Selecting which game to host homecoming activities around is a group effort including the athletic department and the alumni association. Whetstone said “a lesser opponent” is preferred and the school does its best to avoid playing SEC competition for homecoming. But the 2009 schedule didn’t leave many options and now Alabama is stuck hosting No. 22 South Carolina and its accomplished coach Saturday at 6:45 p.m.

Hannah learned hard lessons from Bear
John Hannah offered some admiration for Alabama’s current coach, Nick Saban, and the Tide program. “It all begins with talent. College football is about talent,” Hannah said. “If there’s anything Coach Saban can do is recruit. And he’s brought in some talent. It’s even harder today with that limited number of scholarships. So your hat’s off to him there.”

Roll Tide!
