Biggest & Smallest Tide Players Honored
Alabama seniors Terrence Cody and Leigh Tiffin were named Southeastern Conference Players of the Week following their performance in the Crimson Tide’s 12-10 win over SEC rival Tennessee last Saturday in Tuscaloosa, the league office announced Monday. Cody was named the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week after his two blocked field goal attempts, including one on the game’s final play that secured the Crimson Tide’s 12-10 victory over the Volunteers. Cody blocked Daniel Lincoln’s 44-yard field goal attempt as time ran out and the Tide improved to 8-0 on the season. Cody also blocked a 43-yard field goal attempt earlier in the fourth quarter, tying the Alabama single-game record for blocked kicks in a game. He was also credited with two tackles in the win. Tiffin was named the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week after successfully converting all four field goal attempts and accounting for all 12 points in the win over Tennessee. Tiffin made kicks of 38, 50, 22 and 49 yards on Saturday. Tiffin has made 11 field goals in the last three games against Mississippi (5-for-5), South Carolina (2-for-3) and Tennessee (4-for-4). For the season, he has made 20-of-23 (.870 percent) field goals attempts and has converted 15 of his last 16 kicks, dating back to the FIU game on Sept. 12.
Alabama welcomes its bye
At 8-0, 5-0 in SEC play, the Tide will enjoy an open date thanks to the SEC policy that no team gets an open date the week before the SEC Championship game on Dec. 5. LSU comes to Tuscaloosa on Nov. 7. “A lot of people need it.,” Davis said of the open date. More than one player said that it will be a chance to rest and get their legs back under them. “We needed this break to take some time to relax, settle down, fix some things that need corrected and use it to our advantage,” said McElroy who plans to go see his hometown Dallas Cowboys play during the off-week. According to head coach Nick Saban the passing offense has plenty of work to do in the bye week. McElroy summed it up. “We know it is a one game season when we come back,” he said.”
Next! Who or What Will Step Up Next For Alabama’s Football Team?
This season has seen a lot of different people stand up and step up for Alabama. This is not a team built around one player as Florida seems to be with Tim Tebow or Oklahoma is with Sam Bradford. Can you imagine Texas being in the top five without Colt McCoy? There have been games like Arkansas when Greg McElroy torched the Razorbacks and put the game out of reach. Other games saw Mark Ingram simply run over the opposing team to lead the Tide to victory. Sometimes the defense saved the day in a brutal manner and kept opponents from ever mounting a challenge. Last week the special team units did Tennessee in. People are tending to focus only on Terrance Cody and his two blocks, but what about Lee Tiffin’s four field goals or the run that little used Terry Grant had on a kickoff return that helped set up Tiffin for one of those kicks? A lot of special team players stood up and stepped up.
UT’s Kiffin reprimanded for criticism of officials in game with Crimson Tide
Tennessee’s Lane Kiffin and Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen were reprimanded Monday by the Southeastern Conference for criticizing officials, raising the number of coaches to be scolded by the league for knocking game officiating to three in the last week. For Kiffin, it was the second time this year he has been reprimanded by the league. SEC commissioner Mike Slive said Kiffin could be suspended if he violates conference rules again. Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson also weighed in on the officiating Monday after he had some questions about calls made in his game against South Carolina last weekend. All this came a week after one SEC crew was suspended after it called penalties the league said were not supported by video evidence. The day after the suspension was announced by the SEC, Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino was reprimanded for making critical statements about officiating in the Razorbacks’ 23-20 loss at Florida.
Alabama, LSU set for 2:30 kickoff
CBS has announced the matchup between second ranked Alabama and No. 9 LSU will kick off at 2:30 p.m. November 7. The game has major national title implication, with the winner controlling their own destiny in the SEC Western Division.
