Saban defends referees
Alabama coach Nick Saban defended Southeastern Conference referees Tuesday against mounting criticism, saying coaches’ problems with officiating should not be aired publicly. “I’ve been in other leagues and in bowl games,” Saban said, “and our officials do a marvelous job here. Are they perfect? No. Do they make everything perfect? Probably not. None of us do. But the spirit of making corrections should be done through the proper channels in the SEC office.” Saban’s comments came after Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin was reprimanded Monday by the SEC for criticizing referees in Saturday’s 12-10 loss at Alabama. Kiffin complained that no penalty was called on the Crimson Tide’s Terrence Cody for removing his helmet during the game’s final play.

Alabama has returned to fundamentals
This week, second-ranked Alabama has returned to fundamentals and correcting past mistakes, but Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban doesn’t offer any apologies for the way the Tide played in last weekend’s 12-10 win over Tennessee. He’s been quick to praise the Volunteers and their coaching staff on several occasions, but he also stresses to the Alabama players how they must come prepared to play every week. “Our players need to know that it’s a by-product of their success that everybody’s going to play great games against us,” he said. “We’re not going to sneak up on anybody. No one’s going to overlook the game they have with Alabama. Everybody’s got it circled on their schedule. And you have to now understand that and be ready to play your best every time you go out and play.”

Football team taking advantage of bye week
After Tuesday’s practice, head coach Nick Saban emphasized what Alabama needs to accomplish over the Crimson Tide’s bye week, one seeming to come at just the right time for a team that appears physically and mentally drained. “I think everybody has to be professional in the way they take care of themselves in this bye week in terms of getting rest, getting treatment, getting healed up,” Saban said. “Take vitamins, do whatever you have to do… to get it back a little bit psychologically as well as physically.” Saban also said this week is a prime opportunity for many of the Tide’s players to get back to the basics and develop good practice habits.

Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium, If We Build It They Will Come
Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium will be expanding again in 2010. What began as a 12,000 seat stadium in 1929 under coach Wallace Wade has grown over the years to its present seating capacity of 92,138 is under construction again. Bryant-Denny’s south end zone will be enclosed by adding more than 10,000 additional seats. This will bring the seating capacity to approximately 101,000, making it among the largest on-campus football stadiums in the nation. The hiring of Nick Saban has assured that all those 100,000 plus seats will be full. Presently there is a six to seven-year waiting list for season tickets that I am told will not be solved by the 10,000 seat expansion to the south end zone. Imagine having a capacity of 102,000 fans and still having a waiting list of tens of thousands extending more than five years into the future.

Roll Tide!
