Kentucky basketball copycats Alabama football
Everyone knows that two sports dominate the Southeastern Conference. Football and men’s basketball. Since the beginning of SEC time, two schools have dominated those sports. Alabama and Kentucky. In football, Alabama has won 22 SEC championships and 13 national titles. In basketball, Kentucky has won 43 SEC titles and seven national championships. But for all those trophies, Alabama football and Kentucky basketball have won the national championship in the same calendar year or the same academic year only once. It happened in 1978. Don’t look now, but there’s a great chance it could happen again. John Calipari is the college basketball equivalent of Nick Saban. Cal is Saban in a suit. [More]
Recruiting: Milliner will be major contributor
With most of Alabama’s secondary leaving after this season, Alabama’s staff has made it a top priority to land top-notch defensive backs that will contribute early and help provide depth in the young secondary. One of the most talented Defensive Backs that is already on campus with the Alabama Crimson Tide is 6’2, 180 lbs. DeMarcus Milliner. Milliner completed all the necessary requirements to graduate early so that he could get a jumpstart during spring drills. With Javier Arenas, Kareem Jackson, and several others gone, the secondary will be looking to reload and fill the void without much of a drop-off in defensive production. [More]
Marcel Dareus: Rivals Won’t Take Alabama’s “Beast” for Granted Anymore
That Marcel Dareus had such a dominant year in 2009 really didn’t come as a surprise to those who knew him. Most outside the program, however, didn’t expect that kind of production from the talented young sophomore. This isn’t the first time the dominant young defensive lineman has been underestimated though. It was fairly late in the 2008 recruiting season before Dareus started coming to the attention of schools around the south. The youngster from Huffman High School in Birmingham, Alabama was considered a sleeper by most programs. However, Nick Saban’s Alabama staff realized his potential and made him a priority from the start. [More]
Tim Tebow, Drew Brees and how they led to Alabama’s championship
It’s fitting that on the day the Saints host their first NFC championship game, the players for the Under Armour Senior Bowl are arriving in Mobile. Because Alabama’s national championship is closely tied to Drew Brees’ arrival in New Orleans and the decision of a high-profile Senior Bowl quarterback who spurned the Crimson Tide for a chance to play for his home-state team. But before the legend of Tim Tebow was fully formed, he made a decision that would impact the future of college football. A seven-hour in-home visit from Alabama coach Mike Shula failed to lure him away from his childhood favorite, the Gators. But there’s almost no doubt that with Tebow at quarterback, Shula would have won enough games to save his job at Alabama. [More]
The 2010 “Replacements” For Alabama’s Departing Football Players Ch. #1
This is an offseason special set of articles that will explain in detail why most people are so excited about 2010 despite a killer schedule and player losses from last year’s national championship team. In no particular order, we begin with Damion Square, only because I’m excited to get him back from last year’s knee injury. I’m picking him to be the replacement for Lorenzo Washington at defensive end. [More] [Chapter 2] [Chapter 3]
