Tide Tidbits – February 17, 2010

2011 BCS Title Odds
The defending champion Alabama Crimson Tide find themselves favored to win college football’s 2011 BCS National Championship. Oddsmakers from online sports book BroburySports.com have made Alabama a 7/2 favorite to win the 2011 BCS National Championship. The Ohio State Buckeyes have the next best odds at 13/2. Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide will return quarterback Greg McElroy and Heisman winner Mark Ingram next season. If their defense can play as well as it did last season, then there’s no reason to believe they can’t make another title appearance next season. [More]

Ed Marynowitz ‘forthcoming’ during his job interview with Alabama
It’s not a minor story when the world discovers that an Alabama football employee committed major NCAA violations at another school. The world learned that fact last week about Alabama director of player personnel Ed Marynowitz. The NCAA said that he placed and received 141 impermissible phone calls and sent 70 impermissible text messages to recruits or their parents while he served as Central Florida’s football recruiting administrator. Of more importance to his current employer: What did Alabama know about Marynowitz, when did the school know it and what did the school do about it? During the interview process, did Marynowitz tell Alabama the whole truth about what had happened at UCF? “At the time of his hire, we knew Ed was assisting the NCAA enforcement staff with the matter at Central Florida,” said Mike Ward, Alabama’s associate AD for compliance. “He was totally forthcoming with us.” [More]

In the Trenches: Expanding on expansion, signing surprises, title guesses
This is the overwhelming opinion by most of the country — Alabama vs. Ohio State. The Crimson Tide will be the best SEC team next year so they have to be the favorites to get to the title game again. As for Ohio State, it’s hard to ignore. The Buckeyes lose only two starters on offense and if Terrelle Pryor can play like he did in the Rose Bowl for an entire season, Ohio State is going to be tough to beat (I know that’s a big IF). My only concern for Ohio State is the road games at Iowa and at Wisconsin. Now after that has all been said, here is the sleeper team that could crash the party … Nebraska. Yeah I said it. Sure it lost Ndamukong Suh, but the defense is still going to be loaded and the offense will be much better next season. Another thing that works in Nebraska’s favor is the schedule. A cupcake out-of-conference schedule, a home game vs. Texas and it doesn’t have to play Oklahoma. I expect Nebraska to be up in the top 5 all season, so it will just need a few teams to stumble ahead of it and it could sneak into the title game. [More]

Tide fans have chance to meet their heroes
Alabama never stopped giving its fans a little extra effort this season. That performance continued Monday. First-team All-American placekicker Leigh Tiffin, linebacker Cory Reamer and — as an 11th-hour addition — first-team All-American Javier Arenas visited Dothan for an autograph session. Arenas said he found out he was coming “about an hour” before getting on the plane. “That’s a nice bonus,” Ron Nelson of Ozark said of the addition of Arenas. “I’m glad they do things like this.” Nelson was in line with nephew Jeremy Balkcom early before the 4 p.m. session began. They, along with hundreds of other Crimson Tide, had footballs and other memorabilia from the national championship season. [More]

Rolando McClain (Alabama): Best inside linebacker in the draft
In High School in Decatur, Alabama, Rolando McClain was a star athlete. McClain stared on the basketball team and played almost every snap on the football team. He was an All-State tight end on the offensive side of the ball and ran their defense as a linebacker. McClain was named on everyone’s top 25 list coming out of High School and was named the top player in the State of Alabama; he was also a Parade All-American. There are a lot of people that could learn from McClain’s dedication and ethics. He committed to Alabama while Mike Shula was the Head Coach. After Shula’s firing the University of Alabama was wondering what McClain would do and if his commitment would still be there. After the Offensive-Defensive All-American game he was quoted as saying “Well you see it on my hat, I have an Alabama do tag on and I have an Alabama undershirt on to.” This was just McClain being McClain. Once he committed to Alabama, it didn’t matter to him who the head coach was going to be because he had already committed to go there and would not back down from his commitment. [More]
