Can Greg McElroy Be College Football’s First Undefeated Quarterback?
Remember last season about this time when people were saying that Alabama might be a good team, but with a new quarterback they could only go so far. I guess they were right, he could only take them as far as winning the BCS Championship and going undefeated. Alabama wasn’t eligible to play in the Super Bowl. Now Greg McElroy is poised to do something no other college quarterback has ever done, go back to back perfect seasons and win a second consecutive national championship and finish a college college football with at least two seasons undefeated. Can he do it? [More]
Former Miami QB Derrick Crudup Jr. joins Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama
Former Miami quarterback Derrick Crudup Jr. has recently joined Alabama’s offensive coaching staff, according to his father Derrick Crudup Sr., a former QB at Oklahoma and in the NFL. While not a position coach, Crudup Jr. will serve as offensive “quality control,” his father said, helping out with Alabama’s quarterbacks and wide receivers. “It’s a golden opportunity for him,” Crudup Sr. said. The younger Crudup, 27, presumably fills the position vacated at Alabama by former offensive intern Sedrick Irvin, who joined the staff at Memphis. Graduate assistant Mike Groh also departed this offseason to the staff at Louisville. [More]
Pruitt excited to be back home
Where did Jeremy Pruitt want to be? He’s figured that out now, but setting was a secondary concern. Foremost, always, was the question of what he wanted to do. And that he had figured out from the time he was a child: Pruitt would be a football coach. Five weeks ago, University of Alabama head coach Nick Saban promoted Pruitt from a three-year role as director of player development to assistant coach, replacing James Willis, who left for a defensive coordinator position at Texas Tech. For Pruitt, it marked the end of three years of dues-paying, and scratched a three-year itch to get back on a football field and do what he has always loved most. On Jan. 15, Pruitt’s hometown of Rainsville was electrified by the news. Back home, folks knew Pruitt’s coaching itch needed scratching. So much, in fact, that it was their itch, too. Chatterboxes worked overtime. The rumor mill spun night and day. “I bet 100, maybe 150 people called me before Jeremy did,” said his father, Dale Pruitt. “They’d say, ‘He’s got the job, it’s been posted here and there.’ I’d say, ‘Look, I just talked to Jeremy — it hasn’t happened.’ And some of them would even argue with me.” [More]
Recruiting: Calloway still solid with pledge after Junior Day
Sure, Alabama commit Brent Calloway (Russellville, Ala./Russellville) visited Auburn last week. Sure, he saw some things he liked. Guess what? The 6-foot-2, 210-pound linebacker/running back still plans to wear crimson and white in college. Calloway was on site at his future home campus Saturday when he attended Alabama’s Junior Day.
“I thought it went well,” Calloway told CrimsonConfidential.com Sunday night regarding his Junior Day experience in Tuscaloosa. “I always have a good time when I go there. Nothing’s changed with me. I’m still committed.” [More]
Alabama Football: Why the Naysayers Know Nothing About the Offensive Line
Nobody seems to be giving Nick Saban and Joe Pendry credit for keeping talent ready to go on the offensive line at Alabama. Last year, even publications like Sports Illustrated said the team may be good, but will have problems with the offensive line due to graduation and early departure for the NFL. I seemed to be the only voice in the wilderness saying the offensive line would not only be good, but should actually be better. The stats seemed to bear this out, along with the wins they produced. This year, we will replace Mike Johnson at left guard and Drew Davis at right tackle. Already some publications are talking about the line having to be rebuilt. Why can they not simply say “re-loaded”? [More]
