ANDREW BONE: Junior Day brings in some of nation’s top prospects
The University of Alabama hosted its second Junior Day of 2010 this past Saturday, with several of the nation’s elite prospects in attendance. The recruits spent time meeting with the coaches, touring the campus, checking out UA’s facilities and learning about the academics. The coaching staff also added a big commitment from the Peach State. Shannon Brown, middle linebacker from Cook County High School in Adel, Ga., committed to Alabama over scholarship offers from Georgia, Clemson, North Carolina, Tennessee, Ole Miss and several others. The 6-foot-2, 240-pound prospect had 75 tackles and seven sacks last season. One of the top players in the Southeast on campus this weekend was Tim Jernigan, Scout.com five-star defensive tackle from Columbia High School in Plant City, Fla. He holds scholarship offers from schools across the country, including Alabama. He had 131 tackles and 12 sacks during his junior season. [More]
Gadsden’s Watch List RB likes Tide’s Junior Day
Alonzo Harris (Gadsden, Ala./Gadsden) isn’t saying Alabama is his favorite, but the Crimson Tide certainly did nothing over the weekend to hurt its chances of landing the ESPNU 150 Watch List prospect. Harris, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound running back, attended Alabama’s Junior Day on Saturday. “It went pretty good,” Harris told CrimsonConfidential.com Monday night. “We spent much of the day with Coach (Nick) Saban and Coach (Bobby) Williams. They talked to us about several things — basically the offense and the program overall. I liked what I heard.” As far as what he saw on Saturday, Harris singled out the weight room as one of the main attractions. “It’s big and spacious, and I like the training coach (Scott Cochran),” he said. “He’s loud all the time, and he’ll make you work. The locker room was nice, too.” [More]
Redshirt Players Ready To Make Their Mark at Alabama
Future success often hinges on the amount of improvement redshirted players make in their year off the field. With spring approaching and 2009 redshirts now foaming at the mouth for playing time, lets take a look at the newly available 2010 players. Starting on offense and at wide receiver Alabama redshirted three players. During fall camp Kenny Bell suffered shin splints and thanks to good depth at the position likely had no chance of avoiding a redshirt. Bell is a small receiver who will attempt to compete with raw speed. Hopefully his shin splints will not return. Kevin Norwood, Kendell Kelly, and Michael Bowman all fought tooth and nail through fall camp to avoid the redshirt. Eventually Bowman was the only one who found his way onto the field. [More]
Is Kirby Smart Alabama’s Coach in Waiting Under Nick Saban?
Kirby Smart is the current defensive coordinator at the University of Alabama . He is a graduate of the University of Georgia, and when Mama came calling for him to come home, he turned them down to stay in his present job at Alabama rather than take the same job at his alma mater. To some, that raised questions. With Richt seemingly in a funk trying to get Georgia to the next level, many thought Smart should have taken the job so that he could wait in the wings should the Bulldog faithful finally tire of continuously having to defer their conference title ambitions. Georgia was also offering a substantial pay increase over his salary at Alabama. Alabama only matched the offer that Georgia had made, so was there something more that made Smart want to stay? [More]
2010 College Football Preview: Can the SEC Win Five in a Row?
The run of four straight national championships by SEC teams has rendered all the debating and exhortation from fans of other conferences to little more than white noise. They can yell, scream, type, and troll all they want, but the fact remains that seniors who signed letters of intent this past season spent their high school careers watching SEC teams win the national championship. In the age of parity and hyperbole, it is a run like no other. Since the creation of the BCS for the 1998-1999 season, SEC schools have posted a 14-5 record, though neither the conference nor any of its members holds current records for appearances. The SEC is also 6-0 in BCS national championship games. No other conference has a winning record in the final game. Is there really any reason to think that next year’s SEC champion will not also be next year’s national champion? [More]
