ESPN will televise A-Day game
ESPN will televise the University of Alabama’s annual A-Day spring game on April 17, the school announced Wednesday. The intrasquad scrimmage will kick off at 2 p.m., and admission is free to the public. Last year, despite an ESPN national television audience, A-Day drew 84,050 fans. That figure led all spring games in the Southeastern Conference. The network has not announced a broadcast team. The Crimson Tide has averaged nearly 85,000 fans in attendance for A-Day over the last three years, including a capacity crowd of 92,138 for UA head coach Nick Saban’s A-Day debut in 2007. Saban often notes that the passion Alabama fans show for A-Day has proven to be useful in recruiting and in upholding the program’s tradition. [More]
Recruiting: Illinois’ big back prospect ‘jacked up’ over Bama offer
The big back. A guy’s who’s both a bruiser in traffic and a slippery, fleet-footed freak-of-nature in the open field. They seem to come few and far-between, which is probably why when they do surface they’re so intenselycoveted. Well, one has surfaced now, and his name is Rodney Coe. Coe (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) is a 6-foot-4, 240-pound specimen who runs a 4.5 40 and stars as both a running back and linebacker. As a junior last season, he averaged 7.2 yards per carry in rushing for 904 yards and 14 touchdowns. And, it should be noted, that was in just six games of work. He sat out on offense for three weeks because of a broken arm. “He does things in the open field that are amazing,” Edwardsville coach Mark Bliss told CrimsonConfidential.com Wednesday afternoon. “He’s got moves most guys his size can’t do. He’s got a gift.” [More]
Can the Alabama Crimson Tide Defend Its BCS Crown in 2010?
The Crimson Tide may be headed into treacherous waters. There has not been a back-to-back national champion in almost 15 years, and there have only been two teams in the past 30 years to accomplish that feat. Alabama did it in 1978 and 1979, and Nebraska did it in 1994 and 1995. Winning back-to-back national championships is one of the most difficult feats in sports, and winning back-to-back BCS championships has never been done. Alabama now faces one of the most difficult tasks in college football—defending a national championship. What does it take to defend a national championship? [More]
State schools will be well represented at NFL Scouting Combine
It’s a meet market. It’s a meat market. It’s pro football’s ultimate career fair. The 29th annual event officially is known as the National Invitational Camp. It more commonly is known as the NFL Scouting Combine. “It’s a four-day job interview for the elite college athletes that are draft eligible,” said Jeff Foster, president of National Football Scouting/National Invitational Camp. It starts today in Indianapolis, in and near Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the Indianapolis Colts. Of the 329 players who were invited, 327 will attend. Seventeen players are coming from schools in Alabama, including 10 from the 2009 national champion Alabama Crimson Tide. [More]
