Tide Tidbits – February 5, 2010

Sims stands out as top Tide prize
Nick Saban looked at some other quarterbacks while compiling Alabama’s 2010 recruiting class, but signed only one. And ESPN says it couldn’t have found one better. Quarterback Phillip Sims’ reputation preceded him to Alabama. The 6-foot-2, 224-pound Sims finished his prep career in Chesapeake, Va., as the state of Virginia’s all-time leader in passing yards (10,725) and touchdown passes (119). He was 48-4 in four years at Oscar F. Smith High School, winning a state title as a junior. “What he has accomplished as a quarterback is very impressive,” Saban said, “and hopefully he can develop and improve and have that same kind of career here in terms of his performance and production.” From a publicity standpoint, Sims has become the face of the Crimson Tide’s 2010 signing class despite the fact that, barring injury, he’s unlikely to play significant snaps next season. Wilson Love joins brother as member of the Tide
Karen and her husband Glenn are no strangers to Alabama and its coaching staff, and are very familiar with this National Signing Day process. Their son Tyler, a 6-7, 290-pound offensive lineman with Alabama, went through the same thing two years ago. Now their youngest, sitting in a suit with the same tie big brother Tyler wore to his signing, was ready to make the move to the Capstone official. Karen looked closely at his tie. ‘Tyler made a mess of this, I thought I got all the stains out.’ ‘(Tyler) makes a mess out of most things,’ Wilson said smugly. Nothing like a brotherly jab, which the Loves have been exchanging for years. Tyler, his twin brother Harrison — who works in football operations as an Alabama student — and Wilson have always been close. They’ve lived, grown and fought together. It’s the bond of brothers. Tide CB DeMarcus Milliner: ‘It’s a great chance for me to play.’
Earmarked for stardom long before his early arrival at Alabama, freshman cornerback DeMarcus Milliner knows what is needed to make that happen. “That’s part of the reason why I came early,” Milliner said, “so I can go on and try to learn the playbook, get the plays down so when I get on the field I know what I’m doing.” Of Alabama’s 2010 prep signees not on special teams, none is being viewed as having a greater chance to contribute immediately than Milliner. He was the state’s top prospect this year and roundly viewed as one of the best defensive back recruits in the country. He also has good timing. “Once I heard six or seven DBs were supposed to graduate or leave,” Milliner said, “I knew I should come in then, because it’s a great chance for me to play.” [More]

Bama finds diamond in the rough with Ivory
How can a 330-pound football player escape notice? When his development as a college prospect doesn’t come into bloom until his senior season. That’s how University of Alabama coach Nick Saban summarized the recruitment of the largest player in the Crimson Tide’s 29-man signing class, Memphis East High defensive lineman Brandon Ivory. Ivory (6-foot-3, 330 pounds) is ticketed for the nose guard position being vacated by outgoing senior Terrence Cody, a fan favorite who occupied the center of UA’s top-ranked defense — and two blockers — for two seasons at more than 350 pounds. Ivory, according to Saban, was only recruited by two other schools and was not on the Crimson Tide’s radar last summer, when the list of players who would be offered a scholarship narrowed significantly. 2010 Alabama Crimson Tide Projected Depth Chart
I know, I know. At Alabama, “depth charts” are considered taboo. Heck, no one even knew until right before the SECCG that QB A.J. McCarron passed Star Jackson as primary backup to Greg McElroy. But, we as fans love things like depth charts. It keeps our otherwise cluttered minds occupied with something of importance! So here it is, a first look at the 2010 Alabama Crimson Tide’s unofficial depth chart. Included are all 2010 newly signed recruits!
