Eli Gold speaks
Alabama football and NASCAR radio broadcaster Eli Gold was in Jackson on Monday night speaking at Miss Ollie’s to members of the West Tennessee chapter of the University of Alabama Alumni and Friends. Having been a part of the Crimson Tide Sports Network since 1988, Gold had plenty of stories to tell about former football coach Gene Stallings, current coach Nick Saban, former color commentator and Alabama quarterback Ken Stabler. He talked about his relationship with Saban, and he said much of what the media reports about him is not a proper portrayal. “He’s different. I’ll give you that much, but different doesn’t necessarily mean wrong,” Gold said. “And who can argue with the results he’s brought to the program?” [More]

Recruiting: Recruits from Georgia a wealth of talent
The University of Alabama football coaching staff is raiding the state of Georgia for top recruits for the class of 2011. The Peach State is known for producing elite talent, with this year’s class no exception. Alabama has offered scholarships to at least 15 players from Georgia, with several having visited Tuscaloosa in the last few months. The Crimosn Tide is in the lead for a signature or listed as a favorite with many early in the recruiting process. A pair of teammates favoring Alabama include Isaiah Crowell, Scout.com five-star running back, and Gabe Wright, Scout.com National 100 defensive tackle from Carver High School in Columbus, Ga. Crowell has recently named Alabama his leader over childhood favorite Georgia. He does not plan to make a decision anytime soon. “I like Alabama because I’m real comfortable with the coaches there, and I like the players too,” Crowell told Scout.com. “I’ve got a good relationship with them. I love how they run the ball. They really showcase the back. I also like Coach Nick Saban and his whole staff.” [More]

Recruiting: Bama surges to lead position for Memphis TE
Alabama struck early with Cameron Clear. And now it’s reaping the benefits. The 6-foot-6, 265-pound tight end went to Alabama’s Junior Day on Feb. 20 having yet received an SEC offer. He got his first while in Tuscaloosa. Clear and his high school coach, Rod Gaston, met privately with Alabama head coach Nick Saban during Junior Day. “It went well,” Clear told CrimsonConfidential.com Monday night. “That’s when Alabama offered me. I was surprised. I didn’t know what to do or what to say. Coach Saban just said, ‘I know you haven’t made up your mind yet but the offer is on the table. Just keep in touch with us.’” [More]

Rolando McClain nursing sore hamstring
According to NFL.com, McClain sat out due to a hamstring injury suffered at the Senior Bowl. Although McClain said he’ll run every drill March 10 at his campus Pro Day workout, the instinctive linebacker has had to have two magnetic resonance imaging exams. The 6-foot-3, 254-pound Crimson Tide standout is regarded as the consensus best inside linebacker available on draft boards. [More]

2010 NFL Draft: Rolando McClain at No. 12 Would Be a Steal for Miami Dolphins
Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay of ESPN both have the Miami Dolphins selecting Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain with the 12th overall pick in the draft. If he’s there on draft day, the Dolphins can’t possibly pass on an opportunity like that. McClain has drawn comparisons to Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens and Patrick Willis of the San Fransisco 49ers. He was the “Mike” linebacker for the Crimson Tide since he was a freshman, and last season recorded 105 tackles with four sacks and two interceptions. Scouts Inc. gave him a grade of 95, tops for his position. The guy is a tackling machine who dominates against the run. His instincts and recognition are elite, and at 6’3″ 245 lbs, McClain packs a powerful punch. When he makes contact, he explodes into his opponent and makes them think twice about coming at him the next time around. [More]
