Tide football hires Huntingdon’s Derrick Ansley as a graduate assistant
Alabama’s football program has hired Derrick Ansley from the staff at Huntingdon College to be the Crimson Tide’s newest graduate assistant, according to an announcement this evening. Ansley coached defensive backs for the past five seasons at Huntingdon, an NCAA Division III program in Montgomery. He will work in the secondary with the Crimson Tide. “As hard as it is for me to leave, working with the coaching staff of the defending national champions is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Ansley said in a statement. “I am excited about the opportunity to learn more under Alabama’s staff and also to showcase the skills that I learned at Huntingdon and throughout my playing career.” [More]

Saban throws out first pitch, and it’s a strike
Alabama football coach Nick Saban threw out the first pitch tonight before Alabama’s Southeastern Conference opener against Vanderbilt at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. Some people skip the ball to the plate in such situations. Some throw it over the catcher’s head. Not Saban. Accustomed to throwing footballs to defensive backs at practices, he hurled a strike. We couldn’t tell if it was a two-seam fastball or a four-seamer. “Fastball” is an exaggeration, but the pitch had a little zip on it. [More]

Artist Daniel Moore discusses ‘A Crimson Tradition’
Artist Daniel Moore has completed a pencil sketch of “A Crimson Tradition,” his new work commemorating Alabama’s BCS national championship this past season. It’s actually the second of five paintings in a planned series titled “The Greatest Season Ever,” and it joins an earlier work on Terrence Cody’s game-winning field goal block against Tennessee, which is titled “Maximum Block.” “This painting will be highly symbolic,” Moore said. “I want it to convey the positive ideals of Alabama’s great tradition, of teamwork and winning (and in particular, the winning of the 2009 National Championship) and of course, about Coach Saban and his ‘Process.’” Moore says he’s now in the oil painting stage of the process for “A Crimson Tradition.” At the completion of the painting, New Life Art will immediately begin the process of publishing limited edition prints. The regular season isn’t quite a preseason for the Alabama gymnastics team, but the top-ranked Crimson Tide has been focused on the postseason since its first meet. The regular season ended last night with a 7:30 p.m. home meet today against No. 10 Michigan. [More]
