Tide Tidbits – March 6, 2010

Countdown to Spring Practice: Tide loaded with RBs
Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram returns for his junior season, coming off the most prolific rushing season in Crimson Tide history. Ingram ran for 1,658 yards and 17 touchdowns, averaging better than six yards per carry. His counterpart, Trent Richardson, is back for his sophomore year. As a tandem, Ingram and Richardson chewed up 2,409 yards and scored 25 touchdowns. If healthy, there shouldn’t be a better backfield tandem in the nation in 2010. Alabama has speed, strength and depth in the offensive backfield. Ingram and Richardson can relieve each other to keep themselves fresh while giving the Tide a dominant back at all times. Ingram’s game as a receiver and pass blocker took a step forward in 2009, often overlooked in light of a Heisman Trophy-winning season. The last two seasons have proven there is playing time available for a third back, so there is still a role for which the rest of the cast can compete. [More]

Georgia Watch List LB with Clemson ties impressed by Bama
He may have a Clemson pedigree, but that isn’t stopping Terrance Smith (Decatur, Ga./Southwest Dekalb) from eyeing some other schools. Including one in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The ESPNU 150 Watch List prospect has garnered close to 12 offers so far, and although Smith said he “doesn’t necessarily” have a favorite and is “wide open” in his recruiting process, he did mention Alabama, Florida State, Clemson, Georgia Tech and Tennessee as some of the main schools that have his interest right now. Southwest Dekalb assistant coach Ray Starks told CrimsonConfidential.com late Friday morning. “I know he liked Alabama before his visit, and he liked it even more when he came back.” In fact, Smith plans to return to Tuscaloosa for Alabama’s A-Day game on April 17. It’s the only spring game Smith is currently scheduled to attend. [More]

Several Central Florida players plan to attend USF and Alabama junior days this weekend
New coach Skip Holtz and national champion coach Nick Saban will be holding get-to-know-us days at USF and Alabama this weekend as the schools host junior day tours Saturday. Several area standouts will be making visits. Headed for Tuscaloosa are Dr. Phillips teammates DB Ha’sean Clinton-Dix and RB Dee Hart, while another coveted Florida talent Jordan Prestwood of Plant City will also be making the trip. Saban made his interest obvious earlier this year when he paid a visit to the Dr. Phillips campus to speak with Panthers’ coach Dan Salapa about the duo. He could not speak to the two players at the time of the visit due to NCAA rules. [More]

Tide national champions change plans, to visit Pentagon instead of Smithsonian
The University of Alabama’s sports information department today said that Monday’s planned tour of Washington, D.C. will go forward as planned, but with one change: the national champion football team and head coach Nick Saban will visit the Pentagon instead of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. No reason was stated for the change, which no doubt will inspire Crimson Tide fans to wonder if the players will be in a teaching or learning mode while visiting the headquarters for the Department of Defense. Monday’s visit is centered around a stop at the White House and meeting with the President. [More]

NFL Scouting Combine wrapup: CB Kareem Jackson the Tide’s biggest winner
The biggest buzz in Indianapolis involved not one of the national champions’ five draft-eligible All-Americans but a cornerback who has elected to skip his senior season against the advice of Alabama coach Nick Saban. “Kareem Jackson helped himself immensely,” said David Jeremiah, a former Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns scout who now operates the Web site MovetheSticks.com. Jackson indeed raised his stock during workouts at Lucas Oil Stadium. He didn’t win a gold medal in the 40-yard dash, but his time turned heads. Officially he was clocked at 4.48 seconds, but some stopwatches timed him as low as 4.41. Only four cornerbacks ran faster than 4.48. None was faster than 4.45. “He interviewed extremely well,” said Phil Savage, the former Cleveland Browns general manager. “He impressed teams with his knowledge of the game and his understanding of what they were doing on defense at Alabama.” [More]
