Alabama wins latest battle
Saban just earned an assist. When the Alabama football team showed up at halftime Saturday to accept the Foy-ODK Sportsmanship Trophy for winning the last Iron Bowl, it lifted the Alabama crowd. The Alabama crowd, in turn, lifted the Alabama basketball team. To come full circle, a one-point Alabama halftime lead became Grant’s first win over Auburn 73-61. But he didn’t seem all that excited about ending Auburn’s four-game winning streak in the series. ‘‘To be honest with you,” he said, ‘‘I was unaware of any streak.” And you thought Saban had insulted the Tigers during his otherwise gracious halftime speech when he expressed ‘‘a tremendous amount of respect for the University of Auburn.” It’s Auburn University. But what’s in a name? [More]
The mental half of competition will make a player whole
Mental conditioning is as critical for an athlete’s success as physical conditioning, but most athletes don’t work on improving their mental strength nearly as much as needed. Athletes will tell you that at least 50 percent of their sport is mental, but that they don’t spend half of their time training those aspects. More and more teams at the professional and collegiate levels employ mental conditioning coaches to help their players improve on areas of mental strength. Alabama coach Nick Saban makes coaching his player’s minds, building confidence and cultivating a winning culture a priority in his college football program. To do so, he has mental conditioning coach Trevor Moawad work with their players. [More]
In accepting Foy-ODK trophy, Saban says, ‘We’d like to be a dominant program’
For the second consecutive year, Alabama coach Nick Saban and his football team have accepted the Foy-OKD Sportsmanship Trophy, which goes annually to the winner of the Iron Bowl. Saban and Alabama players took part in a ceremony at halftime of today’s Alabama-Auburn basketball game. A capacity crowd looked on and responded with several loud ovations. “We’d like to thank all the fans who are a part of our team, who have made this a positive and special place to be the coach, to be a player, and it’s great to be a part of the University of Alabama and its special tradition that we have here,” Saban said. “We’d also like to say that what was accomplished by this team, we hope was not the end but the beginning. “With the returning players that we have and all the players that we’ll recruit in the future, we’d like to be a dominant program and something you all can be proud of. Thank you very much, and Roll Tide.” [More]
What Nick Saban Has Brought to Alabama in Only Three Years
It is the afternoon of January 2, 2007. The Alabama football program is searching for a new coach and has been turned down by Rich Rodriguez. Tide fans are praying that the latest candidate, Miami Dolphins coach Nick Saban, will become the next coach for the Crimson Tide. The next day, Saban notified Alabama AD Mal Moore that he would accept the offer, and the Tide nation went crazy. The Crimson Tide had not enjoyed much success since Gene Stallings left, and there was a constant rotation of new coaches in town. The football program had suffered through bad coaching, probation, bad recruiting, and little depth. t is now March 2010, which means Saban has been the Head Coach for three years. The Tide now has some third-string players that could start for other SEC teams. During the 2009 season, the program received its first Heisman, its 13th national championship, and convincingly beat the proud Florida Gators. The Tide is probably the deepest and most talented team in the country, and the Alabama fanbase is proud once again, especially with two victories in a row against Auburn. [More]
