Alabama gets another leg up on Auburn

Posted by BamaFootball4Life | Jun 29, 2010 | -

Saban is getting a statue in August to bronze his place in the school’s history as the latest head coach of a national championship team, but the real monument to Alabama football stands directly behind. Bryant-Denny stands taller than ever, physically, aesthetically and psychologically, as its latest expansion to 101,070 seats wraps up. The grand re-opening, scheduled for the Sept. 4 opener against San Jose State, will put the best team in the nation in what may be the best digs in the country. There are larger on-campus stadiums, but not many. While such schools as Penn State, Michigan and Ohio State don’t have to feel threatened by Alabama’s bigger-is-better philosophy, there’s another school closer to home that’s falling farther behind in this football arms race. The gap between Bryant-Denny and Jordan-Hare hasn’t been this large, in Alabama’s favor, since 1969. The next year, Auburn expanded its stadium to make it bigger than Alabama’s. Can Auburn keep up without building up its own house? [More]

Joe Kines’ daughter killed in auto accident

A fatal auto accident in Tuscaloosa today has tragically claimed the life of Susan Kines Langston, the daughter of former Alabama assistant and interim head football coach Joe Kines, the Tuscaloosa Police Department has confirmed. Tuscaloosa Police responded to a fatal accident in the 5700 Block of North Ridge Rd. at 11:14 a.m. The accident involved a 2002 Ford Explorer and a 2005 Buick Lacrosse. The Ford Explorer crossed over the center line and hit the Buick Lacrosse head on, according to police, and Mrs. Langston, the driver of the Buick Lacrosse, died on the scene. “All of us at the athletic department were devastated to hear the news of the accident involving Susan Kines Langston,” UA athletics director Mal Moore said in a statement. “It is a terrible tragedy for Joe and Rubye and our hearts go out to them and their entire family. Our prayers are with the Kines and Langston families during this difficult time.” [More]

Nick Saban the top SEC coach

A year ago, Urban Meyer was the chosen one. The debate over who was the best head football coach in the SEC had seemingly ended a few months earlier at the Georgia Dome. Some in the news media were pushing Meyer as perhaps, the greatest coach ever. Today, a new (but familiar) man sits atop my annual rankings of SEC coaches: 1. Nick Saban (Alabama): From No. 2 to Meyer a year ago to No. 1, not only in the SEC but in all of college football. With two national titles (at different schools), three SEC crowns and the preseason No. 1 in the nation for the upcoming season, life is good for the Alabama coach. [More]

College football not far away

The brief World Cup flirtation is over, the preseason magazines are out and the Southeastern Conference Media Days are three weeks away. Two months removed from spring practice and just about a month away from reporting as a team for fall practice, it’s time to start thinking a little bit about Alabama and Auburn football. Based on conversations with Nick Saban, face-to-face and otherwise, the Crimson Tide coach has effectively cut the cord with last year’s national championship team. At some point, we can only assume, the players had a chance to relish their achievement, and that the 24-hour rule got stretched out at least to 48. But he’s made it clear Alabama isn’t defending anything, only building toward a new goal. [More]
