Football stadium expansion on schedule

Posted by BamaFootball4Life | Jun 26, 2010 | -

The expansion project at Bryant-Denny Stadium has remained on schedule and has moved beyond structural work and more into finer details, University of Alabama Director of Athletics Mal Moore said Thursday at The ARC of Tuscaloosa Annual Charity Golf Tournament. “I think everything is on schedule, particularly the stadium,” Moore told tidesportsextra.com. “I was over there yesterday, kind of walking through some of it. It is beautiful. All the work now is being done inside the South end zone. The carpet is down, a lot of finishing work. They’ll be bringing in furniture shortly.” The project will add seating and suite boxes to the South end zone and push total capacity over 101,000, putting Bryant-Denny Stadium among the nation’s five largest college football venues. The new expansion will debut on Sept. 4, when the Crimson Tide hosts San Jose State for its season-opening game. [More]

Pruitt gives glimpse inside Alabama football

About 100 of DeKalb’s Crimson Nation turned out to hear Rainsville native and Tide defensive secondary coach Jeremy Pruitt talk about the past, present and future of Alabama football. Pruitt gave a glimpse of what’s to come, especially with defensive backs. He said after losing six defensive backs to graduation, including starters Kareem Jackson, Justin Woodall and Javier Arenas, some freshmen will be asked to fill the roles. He pointed to John Fulton, DeMarcus Milliner and Robby Green as some examples. Pruitt said recruiting has changed a bit at Alabama after the Tide won its 13th national championship. “We are very thorough in our evaluation process,” Pruitt said. “We just don’t throw offers out there because of where we are.” Pruitt said he gives credit to head coach Nick Saban for Alabama’s recent success. “He’s relentless, tireless and motivated,” Pruitt said. “That’s what I like about Alabama football. Coach is a businessman. He’s all business and is wise.” [More]

The SEC’s best players: No. 7 Dont’a Hightower, LB, Jr., Alabama

Because he played in only four games last season, the 6-foot-4, 260-pound Hightower might be off the radar for some people. But he rehabilitated like a mad man from a left knee injury that cut short his sophomore season and was back out there going through contact this spring. Alabama coach Nick Saban thought Hightower was the best linebacker prospect in the country when he signed him, and if he stays healthy next season, Hightower will prove just how good he really is. A first-team Freshman All-American two years ago, Hightower became one of only 11 true freshmen in Alabama history since 1972 to start the season opener. He’ll move over to the middle linebacker position in 2010 to take over for Rolando McClain, but is also one of the Crimson Tide’s best pass-rushers. [More]

Saban Coaching Tree Continues To Grow

Saban has gone on to have even greater success in Tuscaloosa than he had in Baton Rouge. With him now having two national championships in the BCS era at two different institutions — which, in and of itself, puts him in a class all to his lonesome — after building both from the ground up (with hopefully more to come), Saban has probably transcended the label of a mere “great” coach, and at this point it can probably be legitimately debated just how he compares with the all time greats. And since college football is nothing if not a copycat game, Saban’s influence is making a major impact on the college football landscape, as suddenly Saban proteges are popping up everywhere. The two biggest landings to date, of course, are Derek Dooley at Tennessee and Jimbo Fisher at Florida State, men who have now risen to the top of traditional powerhouse programs. Perhaps not as well known, however, is Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio, who served as a defensive backs coach for five years when Saban resided in East Lansing. [More]
