As a college sophomore at Alabama, Rolando McClain established himself as a team leader for the Crimson Tide and also perhaps the best linebacker in the nation. In his 2009 junior season, he put an exclamation point on that statement with an undefeated season that was capped by total annihilation of the Tim Tebow led back-to-back National Champion Florida Gators. To end his junior season at Alabama, he led the Tide to a National Championship win against the Texas Longhorns in a dominating defensive performance. Crimson Tide Head Coach Nick Saban spoke of McClain prior to the season also. He said, “He can affect other people and he does affect other people on the defense. If you’re gonna be a great player, I don’t know any great players that don’t inspire other people on their unit, and he certainly has the ability to do that.” [More]
Alabama is the defending national champion, has the defending Heisman Trophy winner in Mark Ingram, and is likely to be the preseason No. 1 when the rankings come out this fall. Oh, and it’s no coincidence that Nick Saban and his coaching staff have recruited better than anyone over the past three seasons. The Crimson Tide have brought in top-3 classes in each of the last three years, highlighted by a No. 2 ranking in 2009. And if the start to his 2011 recruiting class is any indication, Saban’s run of top classes won’t end this year. The Tide currently have the third-ranked class in the country with 14 commitments, including four Under Armour All-Americans and five ESPNU 150 players. But Alabama is hardly finished. This class is only about half-filled right now, and Saban & Co. tend to close hard and fast. They are in on some of the best prospects both in the South and across the country. [More]
Readers of ’BAMA Magazine had the opportunity to select three defensive linemen when they chose the Alabama football Team of the Decade for the first ten years of the New Millennium (2000-2009). One of those selected was Terrence Cody, who played for the Crimson Tide 2008-09. He came to Bama from Gulf Coast Community College in Mississippi, although he is a native of Fort Myers, Florida. Cody had one scholarship offer out of Gulf Coast Community College in Mississippi following the 2007 season. Alabama Coach Nick Saban thought he could find a use for an athletic 6-5, 350-pound nose guard. Cody became a cult figure of Alabama football. Although Cody ordinarily played just two plays per series, coming out on most passing downs, and had just 52 tackles in two seasons, he was an All-America because of his impact on the game. [More]
A year ago, Nick Saban came to the Angelo Football Clinic following a successful season with a disappointing ending. At the conclusion of the 2009 season, the Crimson Tide redeemed itself, riding an undefeated campaign into the national championship game, where they defeated Texas for the crown. Wearing a 2009 National Champions shirt on Wednesday, Saban spoke to the hundreds of coaches in town for the annual event. “I really like talking football,” Saban said. “I am not like a lot of head coaches. If you come to our practice, you can’t tell who is the head coach because I am out there still coaching players. I enjoy that part of it and that is why I enjoy these kinds of clinics.” Going undefeated two years in a row isn’t easy, and over the past several years it has been shown that to play for or win the national title, that is what a team likely has to do. In a conference like the SEC, Saban said it is even harder. [More]
