Saban’s Statue May Not Be Ready Until Mid-Season

Posted by BamaFootball4Life | Jun 30, 2010 | -

A statue of Alabama football coach Nick Saban might not be ready in time for the Sept.4 opener against San Jose State. Thad Turnipseed, the Crimson Tide’s director of athletic facilities, said the unveiling might have to wait until midseason to get it just right. The statue will honor Saban for the program’s latest national title. “We’re about 65percent there,” Turnipseed said. Previous Alabama coaches to win national titles have statues outside the stadium: Wallace Wade, Frank Thomas, Bear Bryant and Gene Stallings. The company that did the first four is producing Saban’s monument. Turnipseed said the first two submissions were rejected partly because the face and hair weren’t right. “I’m the one that’s controlling the schedule based on getting it right,” he said. [More]

Alabama-Penn State Preview

Joe Paterno and Nick Saban match wits, in front of 101,000-plus and a national TV audience. Classic match-up. This game will be a physical, old-school battle. The last time Coach Paterno showed up at Bryant-Denny Stadium, they left with a 9-0 win. Penn State will have a new QB and will be determined to run senior back Evan Royster at the Tide. Kirby Smart is already thinking about this. Can we stop the run, against a powerful attack? Tide nose tackle Josh Chapman will match up against the top center in college football (Stefen Wisniewski). This should be good. [More]

Saban against NCAA proposal to limit support staffs

Last week, an NCAA Division I Recruiting and Athletics Personnel Issues Cabinet announced a proposal to cap support personnel at four for Division I-A teams. Alabama appears to have seven football support staff members who would be counted toward the rule if it passed. Saban said he does not support the proposal. “One of the ways we benefit the players is to have a good support staff,” he said. “Player development areas, which could be behavioral issues, it could be peer intervention, it could be developing leadership, it could be how to help guys work on being successful … we have a lot of these programs implemented, and it’s helped our players. It’s helped them have a better opportunity to be successful in life. I think to have an academic staff is all-inclusive enough to help these guys get an education and make sure they’re doing the right things are really important, and to really have the kind of staff you need to really develop them as football players.” [More]
