UA summer camp attracts top recruits

Posted by BamaFootball4Life | Jun 15, 2010 | -

The University of Alabama coaching staff welcomed an abundance of football talent last week for UA’s first summer camp. The Tide picked up two commitments, with one from Alabama’s own backyard and the other from the West Coast. The staff also welcomed several five-star visitors. Several of the Tide’s top targets competed in the camp, including National 100 recruits Trey DePriest, Scout.com five-star middle linebacker from Springfield High School in Ohio; Jermauria Rasco, five-star defensive end from Evangel Christian School in Shreveport, La.; Marvin Shinn, four-star wide receiver from Vigor High School in Prichard; LaMichael Fanning, four-star defensive end from Auburn High School; and Nickolas Brassell, four-star wide receiver from South Panola High School in Batesville, Miss. Arrogant Texas wanted no part of SEC

I lived in Texas for almost a decade. I think that qualifies me to understand at least a little about Texans. When all this college football expansion talk surfaced a few years ago, and overtures from the SEC and PAC-10 started coming toward the Big 12 (primarily The University of Texas), one thing was clear: The Big 12 would ONLY go where the Longhorns wanted the conference to go. And where Texas wanted the Big 12 to go was nowhere! When all this expansion stuff was going wild Monday morning, I called a big-time athletic director friend of mine in Texas for some insight about what the hell was going on. Texas never really wanted to go to the SEC because they weren’t interested in potential consecutive-week whippings from Alabama, Florida and (occasionally) LSU, Auburn, Georgia and (yes!) even Ole Miss! Texas wanted to control things. [More]

UCLA to lead Alabama’s 2012 schedule?

The recent flurry of activity regarding conference expansion has slowed the chatter surrounding Alabama’s pursuit to find a high-profile opponent for its 2012 non-conference football schedule. A blog today by Chris Foster of the Los Angeles Times says an opportunity has developed for UCLA to play Alabama at a neutral site (like Dallas, perhaps) to open the 2012 season. The possibility comes up because Nebraska, after just joining the Big Ten, could ask out of a planned 2012 game with UCLA. If that happens, “the Bruins and Crimson Tide probably will have a date,” Foster writes. Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban has said he wants one high-profile non-conference opponent each season. Penn State visits Alabama in 2010 with the Tide returning the trip in 2011. [More]

Saban statue nearly complete

Sculptors expect to finish a bronze statue of University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban, planned for placement on the Walk of Champions plaza outside Bryant-Denny Stadium, within two weeks. For now, the statue remains in Oklahoma City, where artist Jack Nortz is leading a group of sculptors in putting final touches on the 900-pound likeness. “At different points we thought we had it, but it’s gone through some updates and change,” said project manager Corey Beltz of MTM Recognition. “Some of the people at the university involved with it wanted to see a couple of different looks, but it’s 95 percent sculpted at this point.” Beltz said MTM Recognition has met with Saban regarding the design, adding that Saban’s wife, Terry, and UA Director of Athletics Mal Moore are among those who have had a hand in planning the sculpture.
