McElroy on watch list for Unitas Golden Arm Award

Posted by BamaFootball4Life | Jul 14, 2010 | -

Alabama senior Greg McElroy was one of 22 college quarterbacks named today to the watch list for the 2010 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. The Crimson Tide has not had a Unitas winner since Jay Barker in 1994, though John Parker Wilson made the same watch list in 2008. McElroy will also be one of three players representing Alabama during next Wednesday’s appearance with Nick Saban at SEC Media Days in Hoover. The quarterback is scheduled to be joined by Heisman Trophy-winning tailback Mark Ingram and linebacker Dont’a Hightower. [More]

Recruiting: High-tech Saban impresses Mississippi recruit

Marcus Mayers a linebacker from Taylorsville, MS wants to stay in-state. However, that is not to say he didn’t have a notable out of state visit. Mayers was a bit awestruck when he went into the office of Alabama coach Nick Saban. “Saban had a button that he could press and close his office door and that’s all Marcus talked about,” Blackledge said. “He’s a small-town kid and he’s just taking it all in.” [More]

Alabama’s cost of doing business

Georgia State will be paid an extra $35,000 for agreeing to move its football game at Alabama to a Thursday. Georgia State will now get $435,000 instead of $400,000. The game will be played on Thursday, Nov. 18, two days earlier than originally scheduled. Alabama asked for the date change to have more time to prepare for the Iron Bowl against Auburn the following Friday. Documents obtained by the newspaper show that Panthers athletic director Cheryl Levick calculated the move would cost an extra $22,500 in promotional and marketing expenses with most of the rest coming in additional travel costs. Georgia State also asked that its 150-member band be able to make the trip and sought a Sept. 1 deadline for a return of unsold tickets. Alabama granted both of those requests. [More]

2010 Position Predictions

Yes, we know. Alabama doesn’t have a depth chart, at least not until the week of the first game, which is September 4 when the Crimson Tide hosts San Jose State. But just as a mental exercise, we’ll pretend Coach Nick Saban’s Bama team does begin fall practice with an inkling of which of the 105 players are first team, which are second team, etc. And that doesn’t mean the guys behind No.1 aren’t good. The offense is set pretty well with returning starters. It is not to say that a returning starter is automatically going to be the starter again, but most of those who started for the national championship team in 2009 would be expected to be good enough to start in 2010 with another year of experience and practice and weight room work, etc. That would be particularly true for, say, a Heisman Trophy winner.
