NCAA targets early football commitments

Posted by BamaFootball4Life | Jul 5, 2010 | -

The days of powerhouse football programs loading up with early commitments from high school juniors may soon come to an end. Nick Saban couldn’t be happier. In the SEC, Alabama and LSU lead the way with double-figure commitments for the Class of 2011. Yet the two Southern powers don’t have anything on Texas, which stands at 22 and counting eight months before signing day. But an NCAA proposal to prohibit scholarship offers until July 1 for rising seniors could curtail the practice of landing commitments so early. Saban is on the record approving the legislation, saying a later date would help college coaches better evaluate talent. And he’s not alone. “If this happens, it will be one of the best things to happen to recruiting in a long time,” said Tom Luginbill, ESPN’s lead recruiting analyst. “It would allow coaches to truly go through the evaluation process with all the pertinent information. “Right now, coaches are forced to offer so early just to be in the running for the top prospects.” [More]

Trent for Heisman?

Trent Richardson’s performance last season was nothing short of explosive, capped by two touchdowns during Alabama’s 37-21 victory against Texas in the BCS National Championship game. But expectations for 2010 are even higher, with ESPN’s Chris Low predicting Richardson to be in the running for a Heisman. “Trent Richardson is that good, that explosive and that talented,” Low wrote in a blog last week on ESPN.com. “If (Mark) Ingram is the best running back in college football, Richardson would make a strong case as the second best back.” [More]

The SEC coaches

Dinner at J Alexander’s and what else but a beautiful woman inspired me to look on the bright side. My negativity has melted into a wave of positivity. So here goes, my own ranking of SEC coaches and what I like about each SEC football coach. 1. Nick Saban of the Alabama Crimson Tide—he is a leader. He knows defense, and how to get the most of each player on the team. He is the best defensive mind in the conference, and possibly all of college football. [More]
