Trying to narrow down the SEC’s best offensive players to a list of five is like attempting to pick your favorite Bond girl – so many choices, so many different talents. But five is a nice, manageable number, and each of the following ‘fantastic five’ will have a big say in who hoists the trophy in December inside the Georgia Dome. This is an elite club – the best of the SEC’s best. 1. Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama What, you thought we weren’t going to put the reigning Heisman Trophy winner at the top of this list? We’ve heard the talk about how Ingram might not be the Crimson Tide’s best tailback. And while sophomore Trent Richardson might be faster and more explosive than Ingram, there is a reason he is the complementary back – because Ingram’s low center of gravity and his tough running style are the perfect fit for Nick Saban’s grind-it-out, control-the-clock approach. One measure of a back is how he performs when everyone in the stadium knows he’s getting the ball. Watch Ingram on Alabama’s game-clinching drive against USC last October, and find someone more deserving as the SEC’s best offensive player. [More]
Ah, the big fish. DePriest has a final three of Ohio State, Alabama, and Florida, but for a long time, many have thought he has been a Bama lean. Prediction: This is one of the hardest calls for the entire class. I truly think it will come down to the wire, but right now cannot give the Buckeyes more than a 40% chance, with Bama getting 45%, and Florida getting 15%. As of now, the Tide leads this one, but there is a long way until this one is over, so hold on tight as this decision is sure to stir up Buckeye fans in one way or another. [More]
Every team has that stretch in its schedule that can either make or break a season. Today, we’ll kick off an analysis of the key stretches in all 12 SEC teams’ schedules [starting with Alabama]. Key stretch: at Arkansas (Sept. 25), Florida (Oct. 2), at South Carolina (Oct. 9). Prediction: In short, if Alabama’s going to lose in 2010, it’s probably going to be somewhere in this stretch. If the Tide make it through all three games unscathed, we could be looking at a third straight undefeated regular season for Nick Saban’s club. Odds are that Alabama will stumble somewhere next season. It’s unheard of in this league to make it through three straight regular seasons without a loss. A lot can change between now and then, but that trip to Arkansas looms as Alabama’s most ominous test in 2010. [More]
I have to say that the ’09 team is currently my favorite and will continue to be for a long time: they were the team that validated the faith we all put into Coach Saban and The Process despite all of the media and punditry seemingly aligned against us in the wake of his hiring, the growing pains in ’07, and the letdown in ’08. Even though we were assured by those who “knew” that Saban was a mediocre coach at best, and that he’d leave in two years, that Alabama was so run down it could never get back to the top and that our time had passed, we all believed, every last one of us, that Alabama would be Alabama again with Saban at the helm, and he and the ’09 Tide rewarded that faith in Pasadena just seven months ago. Because this team and its success was the culmination of so much effort, faith, and support from from everyone involved, be it the staff, the administration, the fans, and, most importantly, the guys on the team that bought in and handled their business every single snap, it will take a heck of a lot to supplant them in my mind.
