Cooperation among several organizations collaborating on ideas to better handle the problem of unscrupulous agents inducing student-athletes into NCAA violations has been strong, University of Alabama coach Nick Saban said Thursday. At Saban’s behest, multiple conference calls have been held that included college coaches, NCAA representatives, agents, and representatives of the National Football League and the NFL Players Association. “We’ve had several conference calls and we have really gotten good cooperation from every group,” said Saban, noting that the American Football Coaches Association has also been involved in the discussions. The NCAA is currently investigating potential violations related to contact with agents among several college football players, including Alabama defensive end Marcell Dareus. Saban said the NCAA has yet to issue a ruling on the junior from Birmingham. [More]
Kendall Kelly returned to the practice field Thursday after missing all put part of one preseason practice. Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said the receiver was cleared by the medical staff after suffering a heat-related injury during the season’s first practice Aug. 5. “But he’s got to work himself back in to shape,” Saban said of the receiver who practice with the safeties in the spring. Terry Saban breezed into the lobby of the Carmike Summit on Tuesday night and stopped to say hello. “Let’s go watch the movie,” she said. “I can’t wait to see how it ends.” Funny she should say that. By mentioning the ending before the opening credits began to roll, the better half of the title character was onto something at the premiere of her husband’s latest triumph. The very best scene of “Nick Saban: Gamechanger” is the very last one, and even though this is as much a football movie as a biography, as much a celebration of Alabama football as it is a contemplation of the Alabama coach, it doesn’t end with the Rose Bowl turning crimson once again. Spoiler alert. If you’re going to see the movie, don’t leave before the closing credits. Or during them. Your patience will be rewarded with the most convincing evidence yet that Saban is a three-dimensional human being and not some kind of coaching sequel to “The Terminator.” [More]
The Alabama football team practiced for two hours in full pads Thursday afternoon at the Thomas-Drew Practice Fields. The practice was the 22nd and final of fall camp. “I think we’ve had a productive week,” head coach Nick Saban said. “I think for us the week kind of gets broken up a bit, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday were still sort of camp-like with an emphasis on things that the people in the first four games we play do differently than what we’ve seen from our offense. Tomorrow we’ll start some preparation for San Jose State. I think this is kind of judgement day for us. We have to make some decisions now as to who we are going to coach and what we are going to do.” [More]
