Saban on the screen, but not in the theater

Terry Saban. Nicholas Saban. Kristen Saban. Mal Moore. That’s just a partial list of the VIP’s scheduled to be at the Carmike Summit tonight for the world premiere of “Nick Saban: Gamechanger.” There’s one dignitary, a man who plays a rather large role in the film, who’s not planning to attend. It’s the title character himself. Nick Saban. Hey, this is the same guy who, as head coach of the Miami Dolphins, wouldn’t grab a bite at Joe’s Stone Crab with the president of the United States, George W. Bush, during training camp. In this state, the closer a head coach gets to the first game, the more closed off he’s supposed to be. If he’s shaking hands in a receiving line, he’s not drawing up plays. If he’s watching a movie, he’s not studying film. They filmed it before, during and after the 2009 national championship season. I mean, c’mon. What are the odds? You’re a football coach, and you green-light a film about your life, and you enjoy perhaps the greatest season of your life? You become the first coach in the modern era to win a second national title with a second school? [More]

Lowery working his way into secondary

Just a day after his Colquitt (Ga.) County football team lost its first game of the season, 15-9, Rush Propst was asked about Will Lowery. “I’d take 10 Will Lowerys right now,” said the former Hoover High coach. “And I’d win some football games.” University of Alabama fans weren’t quite sure what to make of a walk-on roaming the Crimson Tide’s first-string secondary on A-Day. That was Lowery, the former Hoover Buc who, according to Propst, did not have one Division I scholarship offer at the end of his prep career. Through two preseason scrimmages, it has become clear Lowery’s role in the A-Day game was no fluke. UA coach Nick Saban has made it clear more than once since fall camp began that Lowery has a chance to play some sort of role in the Crimson Tide’s defensive backfield, as well as on special teams. “Will Lowery is obviously a guy that is going to be a contributor to our team some kind of way this year,” Saban said during camp. “It could be a fairly significant role. He’s been with the program for a couple of years, has learned a lot and has developed nicely as a player.” [More]

Eddie Lacy making his move

Alabama redshirt freshman Eddie Lacy rushed 15 times for 61 yards during Saturday’s scrimmage, leading the Crimson Tide in attempts and yardage during the closed workout. That increased workload could be a sign that Lacy is on a path to claim Alabama’s third tailback role behind Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson that was left vacant by departed senior Roy Upchurch. “Eddie Lacy has improved a lot since last year,” Ingram said. “He’s doing a lot of great things. Whatever role he plays on the team, I’m sure he’s going to do a great job. He’s been running the ball well. He’s getting better. He’s knows his assignments more. He should be able to contribute.” Saban summed up the tailback race last week by saying, “We have two really good backs. We have a lot of other guys out there competing, and they all need get better, tougher and play with more consistency.” [More]
