A long way to San Jose

Posted by BamaFootball4Life | Sep 2, 2010 | -

San Jose State has never beaten an SEC team and likely won’t break that trend against No. 1 Alabama on Saturday. The Spartans were just 2-10 a year ago, including a 1-7 mark in the Western Athletic Conference. They are 0-3 against the SEC, suffering a pair of beatdowns at the hands of Florida (59-21 in 1991 and 65-3 in 2003) and a narrow 29-21 loss to LSU in 1999. Alabama, meanwhile, is 91-21-3 all-time in openers, including a 3-0 mark under current coach Nick Saban. San Jose State is the 54th different opening day opponent for Alabama. The Tide opened the week as a 39-point favorite over the Spartans. Just don’t tell Saban. [More]

Richardson takes center stage

No. 1 Alabama is handing off to Trent Richardson earlier than expected. The Crimson Tide tailback is temporarily taking over for Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram. Ingram is out for Saturday night’s opener against San Jose State with a knee injury. Tide coach Nick Saban says Ingram’s recovery time figures to be “relatively short.” The presence of the playmaking Richardson helps ease Alabama’s concerns. He was already set to play a prominent role in the offense after running for 745 yards as a freshman. Richardson will also return kicks. [More]

Nike reveals Bama’s new uniforms

After a few weeks of speculation, the specially designed Alabama football jerseys were unveiled Wednesday morning in New York. The Nike Pro Combat uniforms will make their only appearance when Mississippi State visits Bryant-Denny Stadium Nov. 13. For the most part, the design of the Crimson Tide’s altered uniforms deviates the least from the traditional look of the 10 schools participating this season. The biggest difference is spotted in the jerseys’ numbering. Instead of plain white, the numerals will have a houndstooth look to honor Bear Bryant’s favorite hat. An American flag was also added to the right sleeve to honor veterans on the armed services. The stars on the flag face forward to meet military protocol. Also included in the package are the gloves with the script-A made famous by Mark Ingram in the BCS National Championship Game. Besides the design changes, the Pro Combat style jerseys are made of a lighter-weight material. [More]

Saban worth every penny

Rock solid. All those who laughed and scoffed at Alabama for paying Saban whatever he wanted to leave the NFL now know why. Even with TB Mark Ingram’s knee injury (he could be out for 2-3 weeks), the Tide is balanced on offense with TB Trent Richardson, an experienced offensive line and quarterback (Greg McElroy) who hasn’t lost since high school. The Tide is replacing nine starters on defense. But Alabama has recruited well under coach Nick Saban, and a majority of the new starters saw significant action last year in back up roles and in situational packages. Grading the positions: QB (B+), RB (A), WR/TE (A), OL (A-), DL (B-), LB (A-), DB (B-), ST (C+). [More]
